Malaysian shipping group MISC is preparing another five LNG carrier newbuildings in China after securing a fresh long-term charter award from compatriot Petronas.
The Bursa Malaysia-listed owner has accepted a letter of award from Petronas LNG, covering five new LNG carriers on firm 20-year charters.
The ships are expected to enter service from 2030.
MISC said it would enter into shipbuilding contracts with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, to construct the vessels.
The latest award comes on top of a separate five-vessel programme agreed earlier this year.
MISC initially contracted three 174,000 cu m LNG carriers at Hudong-Zhonghua, adding another two in February. Petronas subsequently confirmed a 20-year charter agreement for all five, with employment scheduled to begin between 2029 and 2030.
The new award doubles that programme to ten vessels.
MISC has steadily expanded its gas carrier orderbook through long-term employment agreements with the Malaysian energy group.
In August, the owner also confirmed a smaller 18,700 cu m LNG carrier at Hudong-Zhonghua for a separate ten-year charter serving the Bintulu–Sendai trade.
