Pope Leo XIV has thanked medical personnel and people who prayed for him during his recent hospitalisation, saying he will gradually resume his activities after recovering from lung surgery.
In a post on his official X account, the pontiff said the experience had brought him closer to people living with illnesses and other health challenges.
“I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital. This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” he wrote.
The 71-year-old pope underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after doctors discovered a nodule during routine medical examinations.

The Vatican later confirmed that tests had identified the condition as lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer, while reporting that the operation had been successful and his recovery was progressing.
Leo XIV was discharged from the hospital on Saturday, October 17, after doctors assessed his condition and cleared him to return to the Vatican.
Following his discharge, the pontiff returned to the Vatican and was scheduled to lead the Angelus prayer from the window of the papal apartment on Sunday.
His gradual return to official duties follows several days of medical care and recovery, during which the Vatican provided updates on his condition.
