MOSCOW, October 14. /TASS/. South Korea, the United States and Japan are essentially working to create a nuclear alliance directed against other countries in the region, Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control, said.
"South Korea has decided to bring ‘peace and stability’ to the Korean Peninsula by brandishing the US nuclear bludgeon at North Korea," he pointed out at a meeting of the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.
"First, it deployed nuclear weapons to its territory in 1958-1991. In 1976, it started to engage in joint drills with the US that practice nuclear strikes and carpet bombings of North Korea, an activity that continues to this day. Now, building on this years-long aggressive policy, Seoul has teamed up with Washington and Tokyo, effectively seeking to form a nuclear alliance directed against the countries of the region," Vorontsov added.
The Russian diplomat highlighted "Seoul’s regular attempts to blame Russia for its own years-long deliberate escalatory moves, which are the root cause of the current crisis facing the Korean Peninsula."
"In Resolution 3390B, adopted at the 30th session of the UN General Assembly, the First Committee already outlined specific steps required to provide strong guarantees of peace on the Korean Peninsula, which include withdrawing all foreign troops stationed in South Korea and replacing the Armistice Agreement with a peace treaty," Vorontsov emphasized. "Since none of the above features in the long-term plans of Washington and Seoul, no comprehensive solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula should be expected in the near future," he concluded.
