Former senator Gloria Orwoba has opened up about her close bond with veteran journalist Fred Machoka, revealing in a candid studio interview that he is the one relative who never turned his back on her family.

Speaking during a segment at Radio Jambo, Orwoba explained that Machoka is her mother's brother.
After her parents separated, she and her siblings were raised entirely by their father, and that is when she began to see which relatives truly cared.
The one uncle who showed up
According to Orwoba, the separation created a natural distance from her mother's side of the family. She says most of her relatives on that side simply did not make the effort to check on them.

"Of all those people, you'll never see me. I won't even tell you this is my auntie or this is who I, I care less for the other ones, okay, because I feel like they had a chance to be in our lives, but they chose not to," she said.
Machoka, however, was different. Despite her father not making access easy, the journalist kept showing up throughout her childhood and teenage years, buying gifts, picking up the children and taking them out.
"My uncle would come and say, I want to see my sister's kids," Orwoba recalled. "Even at 14, my uncle would come and say, I want to see my sister's kids."
That consistent presence, she said, is the reason she holds him in such high regard today and why she extends him a level of grace she does not offer others.
Why she always gives him grace
Orwoba also addressed the public spats she and Machoka are known to have, framing their friction as a sign of genuine closeness rather than animosity.
"That's why we always fight because there's a certain, there's a relationship. Him? He can do anything he wants to do because I'll always give him grace," she said, adding that she would always forgive him no matter what he did because of the role he played in her formative years.
