A magnitude 9.9 earthquake would exceed the strongest earthquake ever recorded by instruments. The largest confirmed earthquake in recorded history was the magnitude 9.5 Valdivia earthquake, which struck Chile in 1960.

A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula at a depth of 140 km. No tsunami warning was issued after the tremor.
A magnitude 7 earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula region on Friday, October 16, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). No tsunami warning was issued immediately after the tremor.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 140 km, with its epicentre located around 123 km southwest of Vilyuchinsk in Russia’s Far East, the EMSC said. The tremor was recorded at around 3:35 pm local time.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat following the earthquake. Details of any damage or casualties were not immediately available.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) reportedly issued an early warning that estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 9.9, forecasting strong shaking across much of the country.
However, data cited by BNO News indicated that the actual reading was around magnitude 6.9, significantly lower than the initial estimate.
A magnitude 9.9 earthquake would exceed the strongest earthquake ever recorded by instruments. The largest confirmed earthquake in recorded history was the magnitude 9.5 Valdivia earthquake, which struck Chile in 1960.
The Kamchatka Peninsula is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region surrounding much of the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently.
The area is particularly vulnerable to powerful seismic activity because of the movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
In July 2025, an earthquake measuring magnitude 8.8 struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami warnings across parts of the Pacific. The powerful tremor also caused tsunami waves that affected coastal areas.
