The statement drew reactions from music enthusiasts, classical music fans and other social media users, several of whom shared their own choices for the greatest composer in history.
Who was Johann Sebastian Bach?
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer and organist whose work became a cornerstone of Western classical music.
He is widely recognised for his mastery of counterpoint, harmony and musical structure. Counterpoint is a compositional technique in which two or more independent musical lines are combined to create a coherent piece of music.
Bach's catalogue includes more than 1,000 works, among them the Brandenburg Concertos, The Well-Tempered Clavier and hundreds of sacred cantatas.
His compositions continue to be performed and studied by musicians around the world, centuries after his death.
Much of Bach's work was produced while he served as cantor at St Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany. In that role, he was responsible for providing music for church services and composed a substantial body of religious music.
His influence also extended beyond his own lifetime, with later composers studying and drawing inspiration from his techniques and compositions.
Why Elon Musk compared Bach to Shakespeare
Musk's comparison places Bach in a similar position in music to the one Shakespeare occupies in literature.
Shakespeare, who lived from 1564 to 1616, is celebrated for plays and poems that have shaped English-language literature and theatre. Bach is similarly regarded as a defining figure in classical music because of the complexity, craftsmanship and lasting influence of his compositions.
The comparison is a personal assessment rather than an objective ranking. Music and literature encompass different traditions, styles and criteria, making it difficult to establish a universally accepted greatest artist.
Musk has expressed admiration for Bach before. According to the report, he described the composer as “the best ever” in 2023 and has also mentioned David Bowie among his personal musical favourites.
His latest statement therefore reinforces an appreciation he has publicly expressed for several years.

Fans debate Elon Musk's ranking
The post drew a wave of responses on X, with users sharing everything from personal anecdotes to philosophical pushback.
@MakisMedicine wrote:
"I would have to agree. (10 years of Royal Conservatory of Music training in classical guitar and Canadian Music Competition Champion who played Bach)"
@PaulinKokomo offered a spiritual angle:
"And he did it all for the glory of God."
@trentmoriarty reached for a literary quote in response:
"'(Bach) is so pure, so relentless and incorruptible, like a principle of geometry.' — Edna St. Vincent Millay"
@My1100101 pushed back on the idea of a single greatest musician:
"Bach was undoubtedly one of the greatest musical geniuses in history. Yet Mozart and Beethoven each reached extraordinary artistic heights in their own right. Art can have countless flower-covered peaks, not just one. Otherwise, we risk reducing the rich, vibrant world of artistic diversity to a tiny garden where only one kind of flower is allowed to bloom."
@macleodpix shared a personal connection:
"Absolutely! Johann is the reason I started learning violin. Pure genius."
@angelataptos acknowledged Bach's influence while sticking to a different allegiance:
"Bach is amazing, however Mozart for me is the king of music as we know it. But then again without Bach, Mozart wouldn't be the Mozart we know today."
More than 275 years after Bach's death, Musk's endorsement has once again pulled the composer into the centre of a very modern conversation.
