Extreme heat has gripped parts of South Africa’s neighbouring countries, with Mozambique expecting temperatures of up to 45°C and Zimbabwe recording highs of 44°C in several areas this week.
While the heat continues, some parts of Zimbabwe could also experience isolated thunderstorms as weather conditions begin to change.
Mozambique: Temperatures could reach 45°C
Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) forecasts temperatures of up to 45°C in Tete on Friday, 23 October.
The forecast places Tete among the hottest locations in the country, with temperatures expected to reach 38°C in Nampula, 36°C in Chimoio and Quelimane, and 35°C in Lichinga.
Southern Mozambique will experience relatively cooler conditions, with Maputo expected to reach 29°C, while Xai-Xai and Inhambane could reach 28°C.
Zimbabwe: Beitbridge records 44°C
Zimbabwe has also experienced intense heat, with temperatures reaching 44°C in Beitbridge on Tuesday.
According to the Meteorological Services Department (MSD), dry and hot air contributed to above-normal temperatures across several areas.
Gwanda, Binga, Kariba and Buffalo Range recorded 41°C, while Chisumbanje and Zaka reached 40°C.
The heat continued on Wednesday, when Kariba recorded 44°C, Binga reached 42°C and Lupane and Tsholotsho recorded 40°C.
Thunderstorms possible in parts of Zimbabwe
Despite the high temperatures, Zimbabwe could experience a change in weather conditions in some areas.
The MSD forecast isolated thunderstorms, brief cloudy periods and windy conditions in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province and parts of Matabeleland North and South on Friday.
What does this mean for South Africans?
Beitbridge, which borders South Africa’s Limpopo province, is an important crossing point for travellers moving between the two countries.
South Africans planning to travel into Zimbabwe or Mozambique should check the latest forecasts, particularly if they expect to spend long periods outdoors.
