Pros
- Super soft and lightweight
- Offers light compression
- Great for low to moderate-impact activity
Cons
- Might not be supportive enough on its own for large chests
Over the last few months, I’ve tested a handful of workout tops, and the Beyond Yoga Spacedye Slim Racerback Cropped Tank topped my list for a few reasons: it’s super comfortable (it won a spot for the softest bra in our Best Racerback Bras story!), has a built-in shelf bra, is size inclusive, and comes in a ton of vibrant and neutral shades.
It's basically the two-in-one bra and workout tank combo you didn’t know you needed. Made from the brand’s signature polyester and elastane blend, it’s the comfiest and most lightweight option I’ve ever worn. It feels like you're wearing nothing at all, but it still keeps the girls in place with a medium-level compression that’s perfect for light to moderate workouts. The cherry on top? It’s moisture-wicking, so it keeps you dry whether you’re working out or just running around on a hot day.
Our only gripe: If you have a bigger chest, you’ll probably want to layer a sports bra underneath for extra support. But if you're part of the itty bitty titty committee, you're good to go wearing this solo pretty much anywhere.

Pros
- Flattering yet comfortable semi-relaxed fit
- Thick, durable material
- Super smooth and stretchy
Cons
- We wish there were more colors
- The white color can be slightly see-through
ICYMI, Amazon Essentials Activewear is where it’s at for affordable workout basics that rival the quality of some of the more luxe brands we’ve tried. The cotton, modal, and elastane blend feels thick, substantial, and smooth to the touch. It’s the kind of material that holds up well throughout repeated workouts and wash cycles, so you can keep this workout tee in constant rotation.
We also love the subtle crop length that isn’t too short or too long. It gives you room to move without showing too much skin, and has a semi-relaxed fit that perfectly skims the body. It’s extremely soft, but thanks to the touch of elastane in the fabric, it has ample stretch so you don’t feel constricted during overhead lifts or higher-impact workouts like running or HIIT.
The only con is that the white color can be slightly see-through. We suggest opting for a darker shade or wearing a flesh-toned bra underneath. The color options are also a little limited, but we love the slate grey and light blue options.

Pros
- Removable Cups
- Sweat- and moisture-wicking
- Seamless design makes it super comfortable
- Keeps us feeling protected and held-in during light workouts
Cons
- Not a ton of support for higher impact workouts
- No adjustable straps, so not super customizable
WH editors have tried a lot of workout tops over the years and agree that the Lululemon Ebb to Street Tank is a reliable favorite. It’s super soft, seamless, sweat-wicking, and ultra stretchy thanks to a comfortable blend of elastane and nylon. Plus, it offers just the right amount of support and coverage for low-impact workouts like Pilates, yoga, and walking.
The most convenient part: it has a built-in shelf bra, so you don’t have to wear a separate bra underneath (unless you want to for more support!). And, we found that it actually does keep us feeling covered and protected during low-impact exercise, which we didn’t find to be the case with other tanks that have built-in bras. Another pro? The longer length of this top (it hits at the hip) keeps us feeling locked in and covered during workouts where we don’t want a ton of stomach showing.
“I love how versatile this top is, along with its longer length and the buttery-soft blend of nylon and elastane,” says trainer Kristina Earnest, CPT, founder of Kristina Earnest On Demand. This is her go-to top when she's working out at home, and she wears it under a sweater for her cold weather errands. It feels incredibly comfortable thanks to its seamless racerback design—no pesky straps, seams, or tightness to get in the way during your sweat session. However, you should note that because there are no adjustable straps, you can't customize the fit of this tank.
We put this tank to the test during a variety of workouts, like HIIT training and running, and found that it’s not the best choice for high-intensity training. We noticed that it didn’t do a great job of holding the breasts in place during high-impact moves and felt the need for more padding and compression. But based on our extensive testing, it's difficult to find a tank with high-impact support. That's why we recommend pairing this with our favorite high-impact sports bra, the Under Armour Infinity 2.0 High Sports Bra.

Pros
- Cotton is super breathable
- Stays in place without bunching
- Offers nice coverage
Cons
- Runs a bit boxy and oversized
This tank is meant to be worn over your favorite sports bra as an added layer of coverage. The loose, cropped fit is easy to throw on, and the round neck with the knotted side detail adds a touch of style. Our fave part about this tank? The cotton material is super breathable, so you never feel overheated or constricted like you would with a tighter top.
“I love that this top isn’t too tight,” says Jacqueline Kasen, CPT, trainer and senior director of group fitness at Anatomy. “It’s super comfortable and loose whether you’re running or lifting, but it still stays in place without bunching up.” Plus, it holds its shape after multiple washes and never pills or frays, making it as durable as it is functional.
The tank is made with cotton, but it also has a bit of spandex woven throughout, which makes it stretchy and not too sturdy. This is essential during workouts, as you want your top to move with you instead of against you at the gym.
We noticed that the shirt can look a bit boxy if you go too oversized, so we recommend sizing down for a more flattering, snug fit.

Pros
- Great for high-intensity workouts
- Designed with cooling technology
- Moisture-wicking and lightweight
Cons
- Not the best option for yoga or Pilates
This short-sleeve workout top from Under Armour is a game-changer for high-intensity exercise since it offers both compression and cooling technology. It’s designed as a baselayer to keep you protected under your sports gear (by preventing pinching and chafing), but we love to wear it on its own as a temperature-regulating, sweat-wicking, ultra-lightweight workout top.
This t-shirt has an ultra-tight, compressive fit (which can help with circulation and muscular endurance), but it is super thin and made with the brand's HeatGear fabric to keep you from overheating. It’s made from polyester for a smooth, lightweight feel, plus elastane for a generous amount of stretch. We love that this top is breathable and moisture-wicking, so even though it’s on the tighter side, it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything. Whether you’re lifting heavy or doing sprints outdoors, this top is perfect for keeping you cool, dry, and comfortable.
However, this top (like most compressive gear) might not be the best option for lower-impact exercise or workouts that require lots of stretching and bending—like yoga or Pilates. We generally opt for looser, softer fits for these workouts and stick to tighter tops for strength training and cardio.

Pros
- Loose, boxy fit Doesn’t cling to the arms or stomach
- Doesn’t cling to the arms or stomach
- Breathable and soft
Cons
- May get in the way of movement during high-intensity workouts
Listen, I love a cute lil workout set as much as the next Pilates princess, but sometimes I don’t want to bare my entire midriff. That’s where an oversized workout top like this one comes in clutch. I especially love it in white because it's just a touch see-through, so it lets me show off my matching sports bra and workout short combo without feeling exposed. It’s also perfect for those days when I feel a little bloated and just need something loose-fitting that won’t emphasize my stomach.
Unlike the other workout tops you’ll find here, this tee is made from 100% cotton. The natural fiber is not exactly known for its high-performance abilities at the gym (it doesn’t wick sweat very well), but the thinner construction and super boxy fit help keep things super airy. I wore it for an outdoor workout a few weeks ago (yes, in August!) and felt cool and comfortable—well, as much as you can while doing burpees.
It’s also just a really cute shape. I love the sleeves, which, despite being a t-shirt, hit at about the elbow, giving it a really laidback feel. I love it for working out or for throwing on over my skin-tight sets to and from Pilates, but I also find myself grabbing it day-to-day for errands and casual outings. I frequently throw it on over a bright tank styled with some longline biker shorts and comfy sneaks for a cool-girl fit that basically feels like I’m wearing pajamas.
As with any oversized workout tee, it might not be the wisest choice for HIIT workouts or anything super tactical. The billowing sleeves and loose fit could get caught on equipment or flop over your face while bending or jumping.

Pros
- Stylish and breathable open-back design
- Sweat-wicking
- Sewn-in pads don’t shift around or fold
Cons
- Light support, so it’s not the best for high-impact workouts
An open-back top is not only a super stylish choice, but it helps keep you cool as a cucumber during sweaty workouts. I especially love this top for hot Pilates when I want as little fabric against my skin as possible. And since it has built-in padding (that doesn’t shift around in the wash!) I can literally just wear this on its own to yoga, Pilates, strength training, or other low-impact workouts.
I have worn this during my more intense exercise like an Orangetheory class or while running, and it offers enough support for me as someone who teeters between a C cup and a D cup. But if you have a larger chest size, it might be best to reserve this top for low-impact movement or layer it over your favorite sports bra.
Nike’s Dri-FIT tech (a blend of nylon and spandex) is also a major pro. It feels sleek and smooth against the skin but also helps move sweat away from the body. When I leave an intense workout class (even a heated one), it’s noticeable how much less sweat I have sitting between my skin and my workout top when I reach for this one, which is huge for me, since I’ve been struggling with eczema that gets worse with heat and sweat.
The material is also suuuper stretchy and comfortable, and never gets in the way of any kind of movement, whether that’s mat Pilates or an intense upper-body session at the gym. It’s also really lightweight so it feels nearly like a second skin, and never requires adjustments mid-workout.

Pros
- Smooth and stretchy
- Built-in shelf bra for extra support
- Nearly seamless design
Cons
- Built-in bra may not offer enough support for larger chests
This tank from Gymshark pairs perfectly with the brand’s bestselling leggings. Like the leggings, this tank is nearly seamless—the only seams are along the bottom hem, but they are super flat and don’t cause any rubbing or chafing when up against the skin.
I love that the stretchy, smooth fabric (made of 96% nylon and 4% elastane) is basically sweat-proof and dries super quickly. That’s because nylon is a synthetic fabric that’s hydrophobic (i.e it resists the penetration of water), so this top is great for wicking moisture away from the body during intense workouts.
Not only that, but it’s super cute, too. I love the square neckline and the length that hits right at the hip bones. It also has a built-in shelf bra to help support and lift the girls for a more flattering shape and a little extra protection against bounce during your workouts. It might not be enough support for larger chest sizes during high-intensity movement, but for smaller chests and moderate activity, it does the trick.

Pros
- Ruching in the center is super flattering
- Removable cups for added coverage
- Lightweight and breathable
Cons
- Doesn’t have adjustable straps
- Wish it came in more colors
We’ve all been in those super stuffy gyms—when I start overheating during a workout, all I want is to be in a sports bra. But I’m not always comfortable showing my stomach. That’s where the Wild Thing Bra comes in. With its long-line fit, which ends just above my belly button for slightly more coverage than a standard sports bra, while still feeling cool and comfortable at the gym.
And, of course, it’s super cute, thanks to the ruching in the center of the bra. I find this detail really flattering—it gives my stomach a snatched look when I wear it. While it doesn’t offer a ton of support since it’s on the lighter side, it provides decent compression for my higher intensity workouts. Its lightweight design and stylish details make it perfect for pairing with leggings at the gym, but I’ve also seen it styled with trousers or jeans for a sporty yet upscale vibe.
If you’re worried about the lighter colors looking sheer? Don’t be! All styles come with removable cups to cover your girls, which is also helpful because you can take them out when you wash the bra. Speaking of washing, we find that this bra holds up well after multiple washes and never pills or changes in elasticity and shape.
One thing to keep in mind is that the straps aren’t adjustable, which can be a bit frustrating since it means you can’t customize the fit. I also wish it came in more colors.

Pros
- Compressive and supportive
- Sweat-wicking
- Comes in a ton of colors
Cons
- Only offers medium support, so not the best for high-impact workouts
This tank won the top spot in our Best Workout Tank Tops story for a few reasons: It's super flattering, never rides up, is compressive, supportive, and sweat-wicking.
We tested this ribbed tank across many different workouts—running, yoga, lifting, and HIIT—and we found that it never moves or rides up. And, we love that it’s a tighter spandex tank with high compression, as it holds us in all the right places and doesn’t allow for any boob bounce. It doesn’t have a built-in bra, but it’s tight enough to hold the chest in place.
It's also super moisture-wicking. WH fashion assistant Rose Lauture wore this during an intense workout and said there were no sweat stains, no matter which color she wore, thanks to the soft nylon. Because it's moisture-wicking, it also does a great job at preventing body odor.
This option offers some pretty solid support for not having a built-in bra (it's all about the compression!). However, it is made for medium support, so we like to wear an extra bra underneath this tank from time to time when our workouts get extra intense.
