Faro could gain a new public park offering green spaces, outdoor leisure areas and sports facilities, as the Algarve city begins planning a project known as Alameda 21.
The proposed development would be located at Quinta da Penha, beside Ribeira das Lavadeiras, with the aim of creating a new public space where residents can meet, exercise and enjoy outdoor activities.
Faro City Council has established a consultative committee to help define the project, taking into account the area's environmental characteristics and existing infrastructure.
A new green space for Faro
The Alameda 21 project is intended to transform the area into a public space combining recreation, leisure and outdoor activities.
According to the municipality, the proposed park could provide facilities for sport and exercise, alongside areas designed for social interaction and relaxation.
However, the project remains at an early planning stage, and the council has not yet presented a final design.
Environmental protections will shape the project
The proposed location is currently occupied by an orchard and includes land subject to important environmental protections.
According to Barlavento, the site falls within both Portugal's National Agricultural Reserve (RAN) and National Ecological Reserve (REN), partly because of the presence of Ribeira das Lavadeiras.
These designations mean that environmental considerations will play an important role in determining how the area can be developed.
The municipality says the new committee will assess how public facilities could be integrated while respecting the site's environmental constraints.
Experts involved in planning
The consultative committee held its first meetings on 8 and 9 October, bringing together representatives from several institutions.
These include the University of the Algarve, the regional development commission, the Portuguese Environment Agency, the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, Fagar, and professional associations representing engineers and architects.
The committee will provide technical, environmental and urban planning input during the early stages of the project.
Additional organisations may be invited to participate as planning progresses.
When will the new park open?
There is currently no confirmed construction schedule or opening date for Alameda 21.
Faro City Council has not yet published a final design, with the committee's initial work focused on establishing the principles that will guide the development.
The proposed park therefore remains a planning initiative rather than a confirmed construction project.
