Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for an inspection and investigation into fire safety and overall security measures at all resorts in Cox's Bazar, following a deadly fire at Tuptup Resto and Resort in Inani this morning (17 October).
In a statement issued today, the party also expressed grief over the deaths of seven people in the fire and stressed the need for stronger safety measures across the tourist city's resorts.
Expressing deep concern and grief, Jamaat Secretary General and former lawmaker Mia Golam Porwar, in the statement, said, "According to information received so far, seven people have died and several others remain missing following the devastating fire at Tuptup Resort in Inani. The incident is extremely tragic and heartbreaking."
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, six bodies have been recovered and six injured have been hospitalised so far after the fire destroyed the resort. Authorities fear the casualty count will rise.
The fire broke out around 7am at the two-storey wooden building in the Patuartek beach area along Marine Drive. The fire was fully doused around 11am.
Porwar urged the government and relevant authorities to take swift measures to rescue those still missing and ensure advanced treatment for the injured.
He said ensuring the safety of people in Cox's Bazar requires the highest level of safety measures at resorts. "The government needs to inspect and investigate the overall safety arrangements at all resorts, including their fire safety measures," he added.
The Jamaat secretary general also stressed taking necessary steps to prevent tourists and other people from facing similar loss or harm in the future.
He prayed for the departed souls of those killed in the fire, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
