We finally have one concrete name in the Mariners’ manager search. Seattle is expected to meet with Joe Espada, and the Astros have since announced that they will not renew his contract. Don Mattingly is officially off the board after agreeing to remain with the Phillies. Beyond those developments, the trail goes cold.
That is remarkable for a search that reportedly could expand from 15 or 20 names to as many as 30 or 40. Seattle has started its preliminary conversations, but we still know almost nothing about who is receiving serious consideration or what separates one candidate from the rest.
The silence makes Jerry Dipoto’s job description more revealing than the candidate list right now. He wants someone who can walk into the organization, identify what everyone inside has missed and remain aligned with the people who hired them. It sounds difficult because it is.
According to Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times, Dipoto wants an outside hire who can bring fresh thought, change the messaging and poke holes in Seattle’s operation. The Mariners believe they became too insular. After stumbling to 76 wins, admitting that much is a great place to start.
The other part is where this gets shaky. Seattle still wants alignment, shared beliefs and what Divish described as synergy between the manager and front office.
All of that makes sense. Nobody wants the manager and baseball operations department pulling the club in opposite directions. The last thing the Mariners need is another dysfunctional season. But fresh thinking also has to create some friction. Otherwise, the Mariners are hiring a new voice to read from the same script.
Mariners’ Next Manager Needs Authority to Challenge the Front Office
The Mariners can interview as many candidates as they want. They can conduct multiple rounds, gather recommendations and fill whiteboards with every leadership quality they can think of. It’s not really the size of the search that matters. It’s their willingness to hear uncomfortable answers.
We will not learn how much influence the next manager has during his introductory news conference. But we should be curious of what happens the first time he wants to overhaul a routine or tell Dipoto that the roster cannot execute the plan being handed down. If every disagreement ends with the front office winning by default, the outside hire will be little more than cosmetic.
Jerry Dipoto Owns the Mariners’ Next Manager Hire
The next manager will be the third of Dipoto’s Mariners tenure. He hired Scott Servais, a longtime friend and former colleague, despite Servais having no previous managerial experience. After Servais, Dipoto elevated Dan Wilson without conducting a full search. Another guy with no previous managerial experience.
Now Seattle is finally opening the field. This will be another test of Dipoto’s judgment, and this time, the front office cannot act as though the dugout exists in a separate building.
Dipoto said there should not be a candidate in baseball who would turn down the chance to manage this roster, in this ballpark and this city. He’s probably right. The job has real appeal.
Candidates should still interview the Mariners just as aggressively as the Mariners interview them. They should ask how much authority comes with the position, whether dissent is genuinely welcome and what “fresh thought” actually means once it challenges an established organizational belief.
Seattle needs someone whose influence extends beyond changing the tone of team meetings. That’s what Dipoto should want. A manager who sees the organization differently and advocates for what needs to be changed for the better. If the Mariners find that person and give him room to operate, this search could produce meaningful change.
