Jambi (ANTARA) - Jambi’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) said five trained elephants at its Elephant Conservation Information Center in Muara Sekalo Village, Tebo District, remained healthy amid forest and land fires.
The agency continued monitoring the elephants’ health, including through blood tests to detect potential infectious diseases, BKSDA Jambi Head Himawan Sasongko said here Thursday.
Laboratory tests had returned negative results, with no infectious diseases detected in the elephants, he said.
The agency’s veterinarians were also visually monitoring the elephants’ physical condition, including their mouths, eyes, trunks, and other body parts.
Meanwhile, BKSDA Jambi had received several public reports about wild animals potentially affected by fires in their natural habitats.
One report concerned claw marks believed to belong to a sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) in Orang Kayo Hitam Grand Forest Park, Muaro Jambi District, near Berbak and Sembilang National Parks. BKSDA needed to deploy a field team to verify the information, Sasongko said.
The agency was ready to deploy additional personnel, including an advance team if necessary following field verification, to protect wildlife, he added.
According to Jambi Province’s forest and land fire task force, fires had burned 4,356 hectares across the province.
“We have received reports of bear claw marks in the forest park, but we must verify the information in the field. We appreciate everyone who reports wildlife potentially affected by the fires,” he said.
