Five suspects have been arrested after two men were shot dead in Steenberg on Tuesday afternoon, with police recovering two assault rifles during the operation.
The suspects, aged between 27 and 40, were arrested by Operation Prosper members following the shooting in Military Road at about 12.30pm.
High-speed chase after double murder
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said officers responded to reports of a double murder in which two men, aged 23 and 37, were fatally wounded.
“Western Cape SAPS management welcomes the swift arrest of five gang-affiliated male suspects, following a shooting in Military Road, Steenberg this afternoon,” Gwala said.
Police were informed that the suspects had fled the scene in a red VW Polo, prompting a high-speed chase.
The suspects allegedly abandoned their vehicle in Kirstenhof before hijacking a Toyota RunX.
Their escape was short-lived, however, as police apprehended all five shortly afterwards.
Two assault rifles recovered
During a search of the hijacked vehicle, officers recovered two assault rifles.
Gwala said the suspects would appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court once they had been charged.
