The Trump administration has asked US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign amid allegations concerning her financial dealings and relationships with wealthy Greek businessmen. White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced the decision on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. President Donald Trump had earlier said he was considering removing Guilfoyle from the diplomatic post.

Trump told reporters that Guilfoyle had been doing a good job but that recent reports had raised concerns. Guilfoyle rejected the allegations in a statement posted on X, describing them as false. She said she intended to defend her reputation and integrity while thanking Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their support.
The controversy intensified following reports by The Wall Street Journal about Guilfoyle’s financial dealings. The newspaper reported that she asked Trump supporter Eric Deters to pay $100,000 in personal credit card debt shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025. Deters reportedly refused the request. Guilfoyle’s lawyer disputed the authenticity of the messages and denied wrongdoing.
The newspaper also reported that Guilfoyle received luxury travel and hotel stays funded by wealthy Greek businessmen. According to its reporting, she travelled to the World Economic Forum in Davos on a private jet with Alexandros Exarchou, chief executive of Aktor Group. It also reported that shipping magnate Nikolas Tsakos paid for hospitality during trips to Switzerland and Paris. These allegations have not been established as proven misconduct.

US media reports say the State Department’s inspector general is investigating whether Guilfoyle accepted improper gifts. The investigation adds to scrutiny of her diplomatic role and personal relationships. Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and prominent Trump supporter, was appointed ambassador after her engagement to Donald Trump Jr ended. She has pledged continued loyalty to Trump while acknowledging that her tenure may be ending.
