As part of continuing efforts to guarantee a stable and reliable electricity supply for households, businesses, and industries across the country, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has convened a ministerial committee on the prevention of vandalism of power infrastructure.
The high-level committee brings together key security and power sector stakeholders tasked with putting an end to coordinated attacks on strategic assets across the electricity value chain.
The initiative was constituted in direct response to recurring attacks on generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. These acts of sabotage disrupt supply to consumers, inflate repair costs, and severely erode the critical investments on which the power sector depends.
Speaking during the session, Tegbe highlighted the urgent need for cross-agency synergy to safeguard public assets. “Protecting our electricity assets requires a unified front. We cannot build a strong economy when critical infrastructure is constantly under threat from vandals,” the Minister stated.
The inaugural meeting was attended by the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, alongside senior directors from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), top leadership of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Permanent Secretary, and directors from the Ministry of Power and its subsidiary agencies.
Reaffirming the presidency’s commitment, Major General Famadewa noted, “Power infrastructure is the backbone of national security. ONSA will fully integrate these protection efforts into our critical national asset strategy to ensure swift prosecution of offenders.”
The committee’s work will be aligned directly with ONSA’s critical infrastructure unit, reinforcing the treatment of power assets as a top national security priority.
During the interactive session, participants proposed robust measures to curb vandalism and outlined specific institutional roles. They resolved to strictly enforce existing anti-vandalism laws, deploy modern technology for asset monitoring, and embark on public advocacy campaigns to prevent incidents before they occur.
All parties firmly pledged to collaborate seamlessly to eliminate the menace. The committee is scheduled to reconvene next week to review progress. Effective implementation is expected to translate into fewer outages and a far more dependable power supply nationwide.
