Compound’s governance token, COMP, had the kind of day most large-cap crypto assets only daydream about. On October 20, 2026, it climbed approximately 27.3% in 24 hours, comfortably beating both Bitcoin and Ether.
The rally came without an obvious trigger. Meanwhile, the protocol’s own deposits have been drifting the other way.
A 27% move with no clear spark
COMP pushed to intraday highs near $29 before cooling off. It finished the session in the mid-to-high $20s, which still left holders sitting on a very good day.
Trading activity picked up sharply alongside the price. Volume over the 24-hour window ranged between $43 million and $88 million, pointing to strong buy-side demand across several exchanges.
COMP also outperformed Bitcoin and Ether over the trailing seven and 28 days.
Still, the reason behind the jump remains unclear, according to The Defiant. No announcement, governance vote or partnership was identified as the catalyst.
The deposits tell a different story
While the token rose, the protocol underneath it shrank. Compound’s total value locked, or TVL, has fallen roughly 8.7% since late September.
Compound V3, the newer version of the protocol, held somewhere between $1.39 billion and $1.42 billion as of October 20. The older V2 deployment added approximately $105 million on top of that.
Compound’s institutional push
The rally lands during a period of strategic expansion for Compound. Earlier in 2026, the protocol launched an institutional lending market offering up to 87% loan-to-value on USDC collateral.
Whether that push explains this week’s price action is unconfirmed. No direct link between the institutional product and the October 20 rally has been reported.
