Shinhan Securities (008670) has teamed up with a Japanese venture capital firm to create a forum for identifying cooperation and investment opportunities between advanced technology companies in Korea and Japan.
The brokerage said on the 15th that it co-hosted the Korea-Japan Deep Tech Conference with UMI Ventures, a Japanese venture capital firm specializing in materials, parts and equipment, at its headquarters in Seoul's Yeouido district on the 13th. About 30 organizations attended, including domestic venture capital firms, asset managers, brokerages, corporate venture capital units of large conglomerates and research institutes.
Japanese deep tech companies presented their core technologies and growth strategies at the event. JEPLAN, which holds chemical recycling technology that turns waste plastic and discarded clothing into raw materials, outlined its closed-loop resource circulation model and examples of collaboration with global companies. Tsubame BHB shared its strategy for expanding into carbon-neutral businesses such as eco-friendly fertilizer and hydrogen carriers, based on catalyst technology that produces ammonia under low-temperature, low-pressure conditions.
After the presentations, the attending institutions and the two companies discussed business cooperation, joint research and development, and the potential for strategic investment. Shinhan Securities aims to use the event to broaden the basis for cooperation between companies and investment institutions in the two countries.
In August, Shinhan Securities signed a memorandum of understanding with UMI Ventures to set up a cross-border venture fund that will jointly invest in deep tech companies in Korea and Japan. After holding an event in Tokyo at the time to introduce Korean deep tech companies, the brokerage continued the exchange this time by presenting Japanese companies to domestic investors.
"Through the two events in Tokyo and Seoul, we confirmed that there is strong demand for cooperation between Korean and Japanese companies in advanced technology," an official at Shinhan Securities said. "Through regular exchange programs, we will identify business cooperation and investment opportunities between the two countries and strengthen our role as a platform connecting the Korean and Japanese deep tech ecosystems."
