Mizzou soccer wrapped up its road schedule Sunday with a 2-0 loss to Georgia at Turner Soccer Complex, dropping the Tigers to 4-9-2 overall and 1-5-1 in SEC play.
Georgia controlled the early going, putting up eight shots in the first 26 minutes. Mizzou didn’t register an attempt until the 31st minute, when Emily Derucki’s shot was blocked. At halftime, the Bulldogs led 10-1 in shots, with four on target, but the match remained scoreless.
Keeper Riley Wilkerson and the Tigers’ back line were the reason. Wilkerson made four saves in the first half, and the defense, with Mia Yang, Morgan Meador and Taryn Chance all playing the full 45 minutes, held firm to keep the game level.
Mizzou came out of the break with more urgency. Lana Adams and Alyssa Bryant both fired off shots in the opening six minutes, and Bryant put the first Tigers attempt on target in the 52nd minute, forcing a save from Georgia keeper Jordan Brown. Audrey Gilbert tested Brown again in the 62nd. Mizzou matched Georgia’s second-half shot total at 8-8, but couldn’t find the net.
Georgia finally broke through in the 67th minute. Graduate student Emma Pettersen rocketed a shot from outside the box that sailed past Wilkerson for her fourth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs doubled the lead in the 81st minute when a deflection by Mizzou’s McKenna Moran ended up in her own net, sealing the result.
Wilkerson finished with six saves, matching her season high, and kept Mizzou in the game well into the second half. Georgia held an 18-9 edge in shots and a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Where Mizzou stands in the SEC
The loss leaves Mizzou 14th in the 16-team SEC standings with four conference points. Texas A&M (one point) and Ole Miss (zero) are the only teams behind the Tigers, while LSU sits one point ahead at five. Vanderbilt leads the conference with 19 points, followed by Alabama and South Carolina at 18 each. Georgia, meanwhile, improved to 6-4-5 overall and 2-2-3 in conference play.
Both of Mizzou’s remaining scheduled matches are at home: Thursday against Texas A&M and Nov. 1 against LSU , two teams the Tigers are directly competing with at the bottom of the standings.
