NAVER (035420.KS) is expanding its mapping service so users can receive NAVER Map walking directions by voice through artificial intelligence glasses, in partnership with Meta, Google and Samsung.
NAVER said on the 12th that it is the first mapping service provider in South Korea to work with Meta, Google and Samsung to bring NAVER Map navigation to AI glasses. The feature is available first on Meta's Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta devices, and will also work on the Google-Samsung "Intelligent Eyewear" scheduled for release later this year.
Through AI glasses, users can receive directions as well as details needed for getting around, such as whether a route involves stairs or escalators. In June, NAVER Map introduced real-time walking navigation that added live voice guidance to pedestrian directions, similar to car navigation systems. The latest partnership extends that support to AI glasses.
The company is also adding a voice command function designed for AI glasses. Users can ask questions out loud and receive immediate answers, and the service provides real-time voice information on restaurants and cafes near a destination. On the Intelligent Eyewear jointly developed by Google and Samsung, users will be able to make a voice request to Gemini, which will launch NAVER Map and begin navigation.
NAVER said it plans to link AI glasses with the local information accumulated in its mapping service to connect physical spaces and digital information more seamlessly. On AI glasses equipped with displays, the company expects to offer augmented reality route guidance along with information on nearby stores and Place coupons.
"We expect users will be able to focus on moving rather than repeatedly checking their smartphone screens, while still getting directions and rich local information," said Jung Kyung-hwa, a NAVER leader. "As a platform that connects the physical and digital worlds more vividly, we will continue to provide users with new mapping experiences."
