Pakistan is considering setting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices daily instead of monthly as prices surge to Rs. 750 per kilogram in northern areas, raising fears that an LPG cylinder could cost more than Rs. 10,000. The proposed change aims to curb winter price hikes and discourage hoarding.
LPG importers have called for a review of the existing pricing formula, suggesting that rates be revised weekly or daily rather than once a month. The current price surge has intensified pressure on the government to reconsider how LPG prices are determined.
Government Weighs Daily LPG Price Changes
The government is examining whether to replace the existing monthly pricing system with a daily mechanism. The proposed approach would allow prices to respond more quickly to changing market conditions as demand rises during winter.
The potential shift comes as LPG prices have climbed sharply, with northern areas reporting rates of up to Rs. 750 per kilogram. The increase has raised concerns about the affordability of household fuel, particularly in regions that rely heavily on LPG.
The government has not yet announced a final decision on daily price setting. If implemented, the new system would mark a change in how LPG prices are regulated, with the stated aim of limiting excessive increases and preventing stockpiling during the winter season.
