On Saturday, the No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish will play the toughest contest of their season so far, taking on No. 8 BYU on the road.
Kirk Herbstreit thinks it’s not enough and too late.
During an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Friday, Herbstreit called out the Irish for their schedule, arguing that it was unfair that they’re only getting challenged in two games this season.
“Notre Dame plays two games where they’re gonna be challenged,” Herbstreit said, via a transcription from USA Today. “[BYU] where they’re gonna be favored and Miami at home.
“Think about what Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State and these teams and what they’re dealing with. So that cannot continue, that’s an embarrassment and incredibly unfair.”
It’s unclear what kind of “challenge” Herbstreit thinks the Irish should face.
Kirk Herbstreit should rethink Notre Dame’s schedule
BYU is the No. 8 team in the country. Miami is ranked No. 3. Those are hardly easy games for the Irish. Notre Dame will also host No. 24 SMU on Nov. 21. The 41-13 win over Wisconsin looks even better than it did in Week 1 as the Badgers are 4-1 before playing UCLA on the road on Saturday night.
Notre Dame scheduled three Big Ten teams, outscoring them by 84 points.
Herbstreit does believe the Cougars have the potential to give the Irish a real test this week.
“But this week they’re gonna face a hostile environment,” he said. “A lot of people sleep on Provo, Utah. They have a great fanbase, they have a big stadium, they believe they’re a top-10 team in the country. Their defense is flying around. This’ll be a lot of fun to see the BYU defense against CJ Carr.”
Notre Dame has a chance to make a statement by blowing out BYU. The Cougars are thought to be a legit College Football Playoff contender. A big win on the road should silence the doubters and Herbstreit.
