Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has provided a significant hint about Dalton Knecht’s uncertain future, raising questions about the young wing’s chances of surviving the team’s final roster cuts ahead of the season opener against the Golden State Warriors.
The Lakers must trim their roster from 16 players to the NBA’s 15-player limit before the regular season begins. With the deadline approaching, Los Angeles could trade a player to create space, but waiving someone remains another possibility.

Knecht has increasingly emerged as a potential departure as the organization evaluates its options.
Redick addressed Knecht’s situation, acknowledging that the former first-round pick has improved during his first two seasons. However, the coach also explained that changes to the roster have affected the forward’s position within the team.
“I think the biggest thing is the team changed,” Redick said. “The team changed. Needs changed, the fit changed. I think he’s gotten better as a player the last two years.”
Redick added that injuries gave players opportunities last season, but the arrival of additional wings has made things more difficult for Knecht.
The comments didn't confirm his departure, although they highlighted the challenge he faces as the Lakers prepare for another campaign.
Roster changes put Dalton Knecht’s Lakers future in doubt
Los Angeles has considerably more competition on the wing heading into the new season. Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, Adou Thiero, Cameron Carr and Jake LaRavia are among the players competing for opportunities.
Jarred Vanderbilt could also become part of the roster conversation, particularly given the trade speculation surrounding him.
With several alternatives available, Knecht may struggle to secure meaningful minutes. His shooting ability initially made him an intriguing addition to the Lakers, but the team's changing needs appear to have complicated his path toward a regular role.
Knecht’s situation is particularly notable because he nearly left Los Angeles earlier.
In February 2025, the Lakers agreed to trade him to the Charlotte Hornets in a deal involving center Mark Williams. However, the deal was rescinded after Williams failed his physical, forcing Knecht to return to Los Angeles.
Since then, questions have surrounded his role and confidence. His playing time has declined, while the Lakers have continued adding players who compete for similar minutes.
A trade could offer Knecht a fresh start while allowing Los Angeles to address another roster need. Lakers reporter Jovan Buha has previously discussed the possibility of a multi-player deal that could help the franchise consolidate its roster and acquire additional frontcourt depth.
However, finding a suitable trade partner before Opening Night isn't guaranteed. If the Lakers can't complete a deal in time, waiving a player could become their most straightforward option.
Redick's assessment has added to the uncertainty surrounding Knecht, but the final decision remains with the Lakers' front office.
Given the Warriors matchup is approaching, Los Angeles must decide whether to retain the young shooter or move in another direction.
