How to complete the Adjudant's quest in Chapter 2
"An Unheard Farewell" is a Valor Mortis side quest that asks you to help a lonely Adjudant. His squad is supposedly scouting the area, but, unsurprisingly, they haven't returned. As the poor Adjudant is too scared to look for his comrades himself, the task falls to William.
Here's how to start this quest and how to help the Adjudant in "An Unheard Farewell" in Valor Mortis.
How to start 'An Unheard Farewell' in Valor Mortis
"An Unheard Farewell" is a Chapter 2 side quest in Valor Mortis. After defeating the grenadier, but before descending the large, broken bridge, you'll walk past a wagon with an Adjudant Sous-Officer inside. He'll be yelling at you, so you're unlikely to miss him.
Listen to his story and offer to help.
'An Unheard Farewell' quest walkthrough in Valor Mortis
Once you've unlocked the Demolished Path lantern near the wagon, you must follow the path leading down the broken bridge. Jump from platform to platform until you can descend no further, then pass through the small wagon on the left (where you'll receive the pistol weapon).
At the next lantern, climb the rocks and shoot the glowing orb to unlock the elevator.
Take the elevator upward as far as possible (the highest level is blocked) and pass through the tunnel on your right. Once you've fought your way through the caves, you must complete a small parkour section outside before reaching the purple glob that's blocking the elevator. Like before, shoot the glowing orbs (there are two of them this time).
Now that the elevator is fully unlocked, you could go upward and continue the main path — but then you would miss the "An Unheard Farewell" quest objective. Instead, go down and look for a narrow ledge; it's somewhere between the tunnel you previously entered and the highest level.
The entrance to this hidden cave is blocked by a web-like substance. Use your fire transmutation to burn it away. Inside the cave, defeat the elite soldier.
Although this mini-boss fights like a regular soldier, he's much faster and deals more damage, while receiving less. Try to parry his attacks to deal posture damage and stun him. Once he's low on health, shoot him in the head with your brand-new pistol.
Before leaving the cave, read the letter to learn what happened to the soldiers. Be sure to collect the pure blade material from the treasure chest, then follow the main path back to the Adjudant Sous-Officer's wagon.
Tell the truth about the soldiers or lie — the Adjudant won't believe they're gone anyway. As a reward for completing "An Unheard Farewell" in Valor Mortis, you'll receive the Sleight of Hand amber, which reduces the reload times for firearms and speeds up weapon switching.
