Military veterans on Tuesday blocked the entranc to the Military Pensions Board office in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, to protest against the formula used to calculate adjustments to their pensions.
The retirees barricaded the entrance with canopies and chairs, while armed soldiers prevented them from gaining access to the premises.
The protest followed growing dissatisfaction among retired military personnel over the implementation of pension adjustments linked to salary increases approved for serving military officers.
The development came weeks after military retirees staged a protest at the Ministry of Defence in September, demanding improved pensions to reflect the salary adjustments granted to serving personnel.
The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, had assured the retirees that their pensions would be increased in October.
However, the veterans have expressed concerns about how the consequential adjustments are being calculated, arguing that the formula adopted by the board does not adequately reflect the salary increases granted to serving military personnel.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, the Coordinator of the Veterans Association of Nigeria, Lt. Col. Innocent Azubike, accused the board of using a formula that allegedly short-changed some pensioners.
Azubike said the planned demonstration was driven by mounting dissatisfaction among veterans over the implementation of the adjustments.
The latest protest highlights the continuing disagreement between military retirees and the relevant authorities over how the promised pension increases should be calculated and implemented.
