It is deeply regrettable that Afghan Taliban have once again resorted to unprovoked firing along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, this time in Upper Kurram and Ghozgarhi. The nexus between Afghan Taliban and terrorist groups is as clear as broad daylight. Instead of taking decisive action against militants operating from Afghan soil, the Taliban regime continues to provide them space and support.
Pakistan Army responded forcefully to latest firing, targeting Afghan Taliban’s Topsar post and Shipola base camp in Upper Kurram sector. Several Afghan Taliban personnel were killed in retaliatory action, and personnel abandoned some border positions following Pakistani response. There should be no doubt that our armed forces are fully capable of responding to any aggression in a befitting manner and delivering a bloody nose to the enemy. This has been demonstrated on numerous occasions, and entire Pakistani nation takes immense pride in its armed forces for consistently rising to the occasion in defence of the motherland. What is particularly disturbing is Afghan Taliban regime’s failure to fulfill its basic responsibility of preventing terrorist groups from using Afghan territory against Pakistan which has suffered immensely from terrorism, with thousands of lives lost and countless families devastated. The Afghan Taliban must understand that harbouring terrorist groups, allowing them to operate freely or facilitating their activities cannot be reconciled with the responsibilities of a government. Such conduct is neither responsible nor conducive to peaceful relations. By failing to dismantle terrorist sanctuaries and instead becoming closely aligned with terrorist elements, Afghan Taliban are endangering security of the entire region. Time has come for Afghanistan’s neighbours to adopt a united stance and press Taliban authorities to fulfil their obligations. Regional peace cannot be secured while terrorist networks continue to enjoy safe havens. Kabul must choose between responsible governance and continued complicity with militants. Pakistan desires peace, but it will never compromise on its national security and protection of its people.
