The Golden State Valkyries shut Angel Reese down for a significant chunk of Game 1, and WNBA fans think the moment got too big for her.
The Atlanta Dream and Angel Reese were held to just eight points in the fourth quarter as the Golden State Valkyries clinched a 68-64 Game 1 win. Atlanta performed well in the first quarter as well as the third, but were unable to hold on to leads, giving the Valks a comeback victory.
All eyes were on Angel Reese as she made her WNBA Finals debut. The young superstar started the game roaring. She had a lot of points early doors, and looked like she might run the game. The second half was a completely different story, however, and it is something fans absolutely brought up online.
Angel Reese had zero points in the second half and WNBA fans were not happy with her performance
Considering that it was her Finals debut, Reese finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds doesn’t sound like a bad performance. It does become a problem, though, when taking into account that 11 of those points were scored in the first quarter. None were scored in the second half.
Golden State star Gabby Williams showed exactly how a superstar is expected to carry in the Finals. Reese is already likelier to get criticised on social media than most other stars. Those who dislike the Dream star did not miss their opportunity.
“Where are all the Reese lovers now? Humbled,” one fan wrote. “She isn’t even in the same sentence with Caitlin Clark,” a second fan commented. “I thought the DPOY confirmed she was the league’s best young player? What happened when her team needed a bucket?” a third fan asked.
“This is why you don’t run victory laps and get so excited for making the finals,” a fourth fan claimed. “You would never know from the TV coverage. All these fan girls covering the game,” a different comment read. “Is this really your queen?” a sixth fan wrote.
As far as Reese is concerned, she has to ensure that she doesn’t let the noise get to her. The Finals have just begun and one game doesn’t decide anything. An entire half without scoring is far from ideal, though, and she will want to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
