The carcass of a wild elephant calf was found in a rubber plantation at Harladka, under Todikana village, near Sullia of Dakshina Kannada district on Friday.
Harladka is situated on the borders of Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts.
According to Forest Department officials, the female calf was about one year old.
A herd of wild elephants from the upper terrain of the Bhagamandala reserve forest in Kodagu district had come down to the Harladka area on Thursday night. It is suspected that the calf, which was part of the herd, might have slipped and died while returning to the upper terrain.
The carcass was buried after government veterinary doctors conducted a post-mortem examination.
