The BitMEX co-founder's on-chain token sale drew fast attention from scammers, according to one report.
Arthur Hayes, the co-founder of derivatives exchange BitMEX and current chief investment officer at crypto investment firm Maelstrom, has sold approximately $22.28 million worth of digital assets. The sale included 6,400 ETH, alongside holdings of ENA, the token tied to the Ethena protocol, and UNI, the governance token of decentralized exchange Uniswap.
The transaction was identified through on-chain tracking, a common method used to monitor large wallet movements by prominent crypto figures. Hayes has a long history of publicly discussing his trading positions and macro views on crypto markets, which makes his wallet activity a frequent subject of scrutiny by analysts and traders.
One outlet, Bitcoin.com News, reported that scammers moved quickly to capitalize on the news, though the specific nature of that activity was not detailed. Such opportunistic behavior is not unusual in crypto markets, where high-profile wallet movements often attract phishing attempts, impersonation accounts, or fraudulent schemes aimed at retail investors reacting to the news.
Hayes has remained one of the more visible figures in crypto since stepping back from BitMEX's day-to-day operations. Through Maelstrom, he has continued to take positions across major tokens and has been vocal about macroeconomic factors influencing digital asset prices, including monetary policy and liquidity conditions.
Large token sales by well-known investors are often interpreted by market participants as signals, even though the underlying motivations can vary widely. Portfolio rebalancing, tax planning, liquidity needs, or a shift in market outlook can all drive such decisions. Without a direct statement from Hayes explaining the rationale, the sale's meaning remains open to interpretation.
The inclusion of ETH, ENA, and UNI in the sale touches three distinct corners of the crypto market. Ethereum remains the largest smart contract platform by market capitalization. Ethena has grown as a synthetic dollar protocol drawing significant capital inflows. Uniswap continues to serve as one of the most widely used decentralized exchanges in the industry.
Market Impact
Large disposals by figures like Hayes can influence short-term sentiment, particularly for mid-cap tokens such as ENA and UNI, where liquidity is thinner than for ETH. Traders often watch such wallet activity for clues about positioning among well-capitalized investors, even without confirmation of intent.
The reported scam activity surrounding the news also underscores a recurring risk in crypto markets. Attention-grabbing headlines about prominent wallets can be exploited by bad actors seeking to deceive retail users through fake giveaways, impersonation, or phishing links tied to trending topics.
The $22.28 million token sale adds to the long record of market-watched activity tied to Arthur Hayes' wallets, though the precise reasoning behind the move has not been disclosed.
