The Tenkasi Forest Division, which has set the target of planting 2.50 lakh palmyrah seeds during this year, planted 10,000 seeds on Thursday.
In an event organised at Courtallam Combined Drinking Water Project pumping station at Kudiyiruppu near Tenkasi, District Collector Ranjeet Singh, District Forest Officer R. Rajmohan, Assistant Conservator of Forest Nellainayagam and others planted the palmyrah seeds.
“A total of 1,000 seeds were planted at this spot after the Collector and the DFO inaugurated the exercise,” said Mr. Nellainayagam, adding that 9,000 more seeds were planted in various parts of the district on Thursday.
The Tenkasi Forest Division, which is buying the seeds from palmyrah climbers, has stored the seeds at various points between Sivagiri and Kadayam to be planted near irrigation tanks, along reserve forest boundary, on roadside and other places with the participation of students, government departments and voluntary organisations.
“As around 80% of the 2.50 lakh palmyrah seeds planted last year have germinated, we are continuing this exercise to achieve the target of planting another 2.50 lakh seeds this year too,” Mr. Nellainayagam said.
