By Zoila Palma: Belize is highlighting its progress in innovative financing for marine conservation and sustainable economic development at a regional workshop in Grenada.
Beverly Wade, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation, participated virtually in the Blue Economy and Partnership Building for Marine Protected Area (MPA) Managers Regional Peer-to-Peer Workshop, being held from October 21 to 23, 2026, in St. George’s, Grenada.
During her presentation, titled “Belize Blue Bonds – The Story of Pursuing an Innovative Financing Mechanism,” Wade outlined key achievements of Belize’s Blue Bonds initiative, including conservation milestones, the expansion of Biodiversity Protection Zones, and advances in marine spatial planning and management.
Wade noted that the initiative has strengthened Belize’s conservation commitments while enhancing the country’s international reputation for protecting nature, promoting responsible blue economic growth, and meeting its financial obligations to investors.
She also highlighted Resilient Bold Belize, a permanent financing project intended to expand conservation efforts, improve climate resilience, support sustainable livelihoods, and advance Belize’s blue economy goals by mobilizing additional resources for long-term protection of coastal and marine resources.
The workshop brings together marine protected area managers and practitioners from across the Caribbean to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and explore sustainable financing opportunities.
