Not too long ago, Negeri Sembilan stood proud as a bastion of political tranquillity amidst a turbulent national landscape.
Under the previous Barisan Nasional–Pakatan Harapan coalition government led by former menteri besar Aminuddin Harun, the state enjoyed a rare commodity in modern Malaysian politics: absolute administrative stability.
Today, that hard-won stability has been recklessly squandered. Negeri Sembilan now finds itself ensnared in a historic, multi-layered constitutional crisis born entirely of the current government’s own missteps.
For the voters, legal experts, and everyday citizens witnessing this paralysis, the contrast between past order and present dysfunction could not be starker. The memory of the previous BN-PH framework is fast becoming the definitive benchmark for stable governance and a bitter reminder of how far the state has fallen.
The crowning achievement of the previous administration was its meticulous commitment to preserving constitutional harmony and institutional traditions. Negeri Sembilan’s governance model is uniquely complex, relying on a centuries-old, delicate equilibrium between a modern elected executive, the monarchy, and the state’s sacred, uncodified Adat Perpatih (customary law) institutions.
Aminuddin’s government managed this sensitive balance not by luck, but through sheer political maturity and institutional restraint. Recognising the vital need to insulate daily partisan politics from royal affairs, his government maintained a peaceful, respectful coexistence between elected officials, the Undang Yang Empat (traditional chieftains), and the Yang Dipertuan Besar.
Mutual respect
It was a partnership built on mutual respect and systemic boundaries, ensuring that time-honoured traditions and modern democracy reinforced rather than undermined one another.
Crucially, this political maturity served as a protective shield that insulated the state from systemic crises. Backers of the previous government frequently note that the coalition successfully shielded the civil service and state apparatus from being dragged into protracted constitutional disputes.
Today, we realise just how vital that bulwark was, and how easily it could be dismantled by naked political opportunism. The moment the BN-PH cooperation fractured, it triggered an unprecedented and destructive chain reaction that has shaken the state to its core.
The descent into absolute turmoil accelerated rapidly last April, when 14 BN assemblymen abruptly withdrew their support from Aminuddin’s government following a dispute involving royal affairs. Rather than prioritising state stability, this drastic move plunged the state into a perilous political vacuum, leaving a minority government in its wake and forcing a snap election.
This vacuum did more than just disrupt daily executive governance; it threw open the doors to the current existential crisis— an unprecedented, overt succession dispute between Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir and Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar, who is backed by the current administration.
Constitutional deadlock
The collapse of the foundational political consensus has dragged the state legislative assembly into a complex, multi-layered constitutional deadlock with no clear legal exit ramp.
We are now forced to witness an extraordinary and embarrassing clash of powers. In direct response to aggressive moves by the new state executive council supporting a proclamation to depose him, Tuanku Muhriz took the radical but decisive step of revoking the appointments of all 10 state executive councillors. Citing a direct breach of their oaths of office, the palace purged the state cabinet in one swift stroke.
The fallout has left governance not just shaky, but completely paralysed. The current menteri besar, Ismail Lasim, now stands isolated—a lone captain aboard a ghost ship. In a bizarre attempt to downplay this structural damage, Ismail has chosen to prioritise appointing village chiefs and village development and security committees rather than resolving the critical vacancies in his cabinet.
To claim that state administration is "running smoothly" while the formal sitting of the state assembly has been indefinitely postponed until late November is an insult to the voters' intelligence. This represents a profound failure of the democratic apparatus, where grassroots local appointments are being deployed as a smoke screen to mask a total absence of executive authority.
Painful lesson
Negeri Sembilan is learning a painful lesson first-hand: when you dismantle a functional political consensus for short-term gain, the alternative is rarely better. The current turmoil proves that the previous BN-PH ruling alliance was not merely a marriage of convenience — it was a vital stabilising force.
The current menteri besar cannot continue to govern in a state of absolute paralysis, pretending that village-level appointments can substitute for a functioning state legislative assembly or a complete Exco line-up.
The state’s political leaders must urgently put aside partisan egos, halt their dangerous chess game against traditional institutions, and return to the constitutional blueprint that guaranteed peace for years. The state's executive vacuum is no longer an isolated political squabble; it is a systemic crisis threatening the very fabric of Negeri Sembilan’s unique identity.
If the current leadership is incapable of restoring the stable, respectful equilibrium of the past, they must accept their failure and step aside for those who can.
