THERE are comedians who carefully construct a stage persona, and then there is Andrew Netto, who would rather turn the messy, unpredictable business of being human into material.
Family, relationships, cultural identity, questionable decisions and encounters with life's absurdities all find their way into his routines.
After two decades on stage, the stand-up veteran has accumulated enough stories to fill an evening — and he is ready to tell them without much of a filter.
His upcoming anniversary special, 'Nothing But Netto', is an invitation to revisit the experiences, misadventures and hard-earned lessons that shaped a performer who came of age when stand-up comedy was still finding its footing in Malaysia.
"Twenty years on stage and I still haven't learnt to filter myself. If anything, I've only gotten worse," Netto says.
"Stand-up comedy has always been my way of turning real-life chaos, bad decisions and Malaysian absurdities into collective therapy."
The 90-minute special takes place on Saturday at D'Stage Theatre, Jaya One, Petaling Jaya, with two scheduled performances.
Organised with LOL Asia, which has supported him throughout his career, it promises the kind of candid storytelling and spontaneous audience interaction that have become his trademarks.
SETTING HIS PATH
Netto's journey began in 2006, when he performed his first half-hour set before friends and family.
He has always been talkative, but comedy offered a way to turn that instinct into something creative.
At a time when the stand-up scene was considerably smaller, stepping onto a stage with a microphone required a willingness to take risks — including the possibility that nobody would laugh.
An early opportunity at The Actors Studio, facilitated by comedy veteran Harith Iskander, helped set him on his path.
Along the way, Netto developed friendships and working relationships with performers like Rizal van Geyzel, Joanne Kam, Jason Leong, Douglas Lim, Prakash Daniel and his cousin, Kavin Jay.
One of his biggest career moments arrived in 2012, when international comedy star Russell Peters asked him to open for the Malaysian leg of his show.
He had expected to attend as a fan, only to find himself performing before 8,000 people.
"It came as a shock. I was originally going to watch the performance. And then Russell Peters asks me to perform in front of what would be 8,000 people. I was nervous, but I did it anyway."
EARNING HIS PLACE
The experience became a defining milestone, but Netto's career has never been built on one big break alone.
He has performed alongside international comedians Ahmed Ahmed and Maz Jobrani, appeared on Comedy Central's 'Stand Up Asia!' and taken Malaysian stories to audiences beyond the country.
He also earned a place in the 'Malaysia Book of Records' for the first stand-up comedy performance on a plane.
Yet the material that sustains his act is often drawn from everyday life rather than celebrity encounters.
His ability to turn familiar Malaysian experiences into humour gives his stories their recognisable flavour, while his quick crowd work ensures that no two performances are entirely alike.
SPEAKING CANDIDLY
"'Nothing But Netto' isn't just a milestone show. It's a completely unfiltered, no-holds-barred look at everything I've seen, survived and laughed at over the last two decades," he says.
"If you're looking for a safe, politically correct night out, stay home. But if you want the absolute, hilarious truth, I'll see you at Jaya One."
That commitment to speaking candidly also comes with difficult questions about where comedy's boundaries lie.
In past interviews, Netto has discussed freedom of speech, cancel culture and the sensitivities surrounding race, religion and politics in Malaysia.
He has also questioned whether people have become less willing to laugh at themselves, particularly when humour touches on deeply held identities or social divisions.
For him, the challenge is not simply to provoke a reaction, but to read a room, understand an audience and recover when a joke falls flat.
Even after years of experience, a difficult performance remains a possibility.
Comedy demands the ability to move forward, learn from the moment and return to the stage.
A SALVE FOR THE SOUL
Behind the reputation of the outspoken performer is also a more vulnerable side.
Netto recalls performing pro bono for cancer patients at Sunway Medical Centre.
One patient told him that the performance made them forget their illness for a while.
"When I was done, I went backstage and cried."
It remains one of the most meaningful experiences of his career — a reminder that laughter can offer temporary relief even when it cannot change the circumstances people face.
He has also reflected on the emotional burden of being expected to make people laugh, even when they are struggling themselves.
His recent conversations about comedy have touched on depression and the pressure to remain entertaining, revealing a reality that audiences do not always see from their seats.
As artificial intelligence (AI) begins to enter the entertainment landscape, he sees another challenge ahead.
Asked about the prospect of AI-generated comedians, he says: "I fear that we might eventually see AI 'comics' performing on a screen, but for me, that's not the same."
He believes performers will need to remain relevant, but the unpredictability of human interaction is difficult to reproduce.
Twenty years on, Andrew is still working with the same raw ingredients: lived experience, observation and the willingness to say what others might leave unsaid.
'Nothing But Netto' brings those elements together in a show that looks back without turning the past into a polished highlight reel.
It also promises an evening of stories shaped by mistakes, surprises, uncomfortable truths and the occasional moment of unexpected tenderness.
For a comedian who has spent two decades turning life's chaos into collective therapy, the anniversary is less about having everything figured out than having plenty more to talk about.
And, judging by his own admission, very little intention of filtering it.
