Kenyan electric mobility company Spiro has launched its first 100 electric motorcycles in Ghana, introducing its Ekon 450 M1 V3 model and battery-swapping network to the West African market.
Spiro is Africa’s largest electric mobility company, operating the continent’s most extensive and fastest growing network of battery-swapping for electric two-wheel vehicles. It has operational assembling facilities in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Togo, Cameroon and Benin.
The company is positioning the Ekon 450 M1 V3 as an alternative to petrol-powered motorcycles for everyday riders, particularly commercial riders and delivery fleets whose earnings depend on fuel costs and time on the road. It is paired with Spiro’s battery-swapping technology, which lets riders exchange a depleted battery for a charged one at a swap station in around two minutes instead of waiting to recharge.
The Ghana rollout comes as Spiro accelerates its continental expansion off the back of a US$270 million equity funding round, as well as US$18 million in debt financing from the Africa Go Green Fund.
“Ghana represents a major opportunity for electric mobility, with a rapidly growing two-wheeler market and increasing demand from commercial riders and delivery fleets,” said Kaushik Burman, CEO of Spiro.
“With the launch of the Ekon 450 M1 V3, we are bringing a solution that addresses two key barriers to adoption: operating costs and access to charging infrastructure. Our first 100 motorcycles mark the beginning of our ambition to make electric mobility accessible at scale across Ghana.”
Spiro currently operates in seven countries, with more than 156,000 electric motorcycles on the road and over 2,500 battery-swapping stations, including 11 mega swap stations in Kenya and Rwanda. It has facilitated more than 57 million battery swaps to date, covering over 3.1 billion kilometres. It aims to be present in 20 African markets, and is preparing to enter Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
