The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested one more person in connection with the methamphetamine trafficking case in Nagapattinam district.
A Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary was earlier arrested on October 16.
T. Rajkumar, 38, of Prathabaramapuram appeared before DRI officials at their Tiruchi office on Friday, October 23, following a summons issued to him for inquiry under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. He was questioned throughout the day before being arrested.
Rajkumar would be produced before the Nagapattinam Judicial Magistrate Court, sources said.
On October 19, a team of five DRI officials from Tiruchi visited Rajkumar’s residence. As he was not at home, they questioned his wife Nithya and conducted a search of the premises. No items were seized during the search.
The officials subsequently issued a summons to Rajkumar, directing him to appear at the DRI office in Tiruchi on October 23 for questioning in connection with the case.
137 kg of methamphetamine seized
DRI officials seized 137 kg of methamphetamine, estimated to be worth more than ₹100 crore, and arrested four persons including Boobalan, an advocate and a member of TVK’s Nagapattinam district executive committee. Following his arrest, Boobalan was removed from all responsibilities and positions in the party.
Police personnel transferred
Two police constables, Sangeetha, attached to Velankanni police station, and Sivakumar, driver to Velankanni Deputy Superintendent of Police, were transferred to Thanjavur Range following allegations of links to the methamphetamine smuggling case and accepting bribe from an associate of Boobalan, who owned a lodge at Velankanni.
