FAYETTEVILLE — Things certainly haven't started so well for first-year Arkansas coach Ryan Silverfield, who has led his new team to a 3-4 overall record and 1-3 in SEC play.
The biggest problem he's facing right now is transitioning from a Memphis program
where he had reached his ceiling in terms of an NIL budget compared to Arkansas' scraping peanut shells out of the bottom of a Texas Roadhouse bag.
ESPN senior college football writer Adam Rittenberg had this short snippet to say about his view of Silverfield's tenure now that the season is over halfway cooked.
Silverfield has some baked-in challenges with his first team, revealing last month that he had a locked-in budget for 2026 and did most of his offseason fundraising for the 2027 roster. Arkansas has not been set up to win for a while, which has sent the UA board of trustees into action. The Utah and Georgia games were hard to watch and the Arkansas offense lacks explosiveness outside of Marshall (14.7 yards per reception), but the recent uptick in performance suggests the players are still competing hard for Silverfield. Ultimately, he will need more talent to challenge consistently in the SEC.

Those "baked-in" challenges that Rittenberg is referring to is the situation that Silverfield inherited with a deficient budget. Such financial restraints kept him from being able to compete for some of the top available transfers, some who were interested in coming to Arkansas, but couldn't come to an agreement what their market value might've been.
That 43-10 loss at Utah stirred the masses of Arkansas' loyal fanbase so much that they began to contact the University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees to express concern over the current state of the football program and its future.
Fans have filled the stands to support a far from mediocre product far to long only to be led astray when athletics director Hunter Yurachek said the resources would be in place. Unfortunately for Ryan Silverfield, that wouldn't be immediately.
"Yeah, I mean that's the exact question we have," Silverfield said. "And I'll say this: like we're working really hard. You know, when I got here, really the the salary...I hate to say that...I shouldn't say that. The amount of money set for the 2026 roster was already set. It is what it is, and there was no changing that, right?"
Much of the offseason talk, with men's basketball coach John Calipari included, circled around not being in debt as an athletic department. While not being in the red to field a football team is one thing, it's another not to bite the bullet and take a chance to see what spending a few extra million will get a team.
"Like some of these schools will say, "Okay, hey, we'll keep raising the money for this roster, even though we spent money we didn't have,'" Silverfield continued. "Whereas we say, 'Okay, here's the money you have set aside, and that's what you have.'"
When Silverfield said he spent at least 90% of his time fundraising, it definitely showed. Maybe not in the coaching department per se, but the talent on the field isn't sufficient to expect a winning product. Kudos to him for understanding that and taking matters into his own hands to at least give himself the best opportunity for success.
"And where we're at, listen, we know we're going to continue to work hard," Silverfield continued. "I spent probably the last six months continuing to raise money and funding, and everybody [was] all hands on deck, right? The administration, everybody understands this is where we say we want our all to be."
He's having to coach up his players despite being up against a talent deficit most games, and it's shown quite often. However, the team's performance over the last two games provides promise for the future that Silverfield's players are going to battle until the end.
That's at least some hope to hold onto moving forward.
