The OpenAnolis community is developing the next version of its Linux distribution, Anolis OS 27, in what it calls an agentic-native way. Different AI agents handle the selection of packages and patches, code review and patch backporting. Ma Tao, chair of the OpenAnolis community and head of basic software at Alibaba Cloud, presented the plan at the GOSIM AI Vision Forum in Zhuhai this month.
Ma also shared a team figure. According to him, 95 percent of new code in Alibaba Cloud's basic software team is now generated by agents. The stated goal for OpenAnolis is to make engineering across the operating system's whole life cycle, from development and maintenance to operation and governance, an order of magnitude faster. He said agents may eventually build a complete operating system on their own, and that the industry has to face that trend. Both figures come from Alibaba Cloud.
Ma spoke on the forum's opening roundtable, Roots: Open Source Holding Ground in the Agentic Era. It was moderated by a co-chair of the LF AI and Data Generative AI Commons and included leaders from the Rust Foundation, OpenUK, OpenCV and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence. The panel discussed governance, code accountability and global collaboration now that AI is submitting and reviewing code and changing who contributes to open-source projects.
Ma described two lines of work. The first is an operating system base for agents. In this view, the OS is more than a resource manager: it becomes infrastructure that connects compute, models, tools and applications. Figures released at the 2026 Apsara Conference say Alibaba Cloud's Agentic OS cuts token use by more than 30 percent and triples sandbox deployment density, with system-level tuning for short-lived agent sandboxes and frequent process creation. OpenAnolis positions its ANOLISA project as the runtime base for every agent.
The second line is Anolis OS 27 itself. The community has open-sourced an Anolis OS 27 monorepo, a single Git repository holding a large number of packages. OpenAnolis describes it as a distribution engineering method designed for human maintainers and AI agents to work together, so other teams can study and reuse it.
Anolis OS is developed with companies, universities and research institutes, and it is the upstream community for Alibaba Cloud Linux.
