A man in his 50s who wounded eight people in a knife attack at a large commercial building in Guwol-dong, Incheon, has been placed in custody.
Park Young-ki, the chief judge in charge of warrants at the Incheon District Court, issued the detention warrant for the suspect, identified by his surname A, 59, on the 16th after a pre-detention hearing, citing the risk that he would flee.
A is accused of attempted murder for attacking 10 people at the C&C commercial complex in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, at about 1:48 p.m. on the 13th, eight of whom were injured, including a 19-year-old woman who was left unconscious.
In police questioning, A said he had been dissatisfied with a hospital where he had received treatment for a skin condition and that the hospital's report to authorities had also led to a police investigation of him. "I wanted to make my complaint known to society, so I committed the crime to create news," he said. A reportedly has 10 prior convictions carrying fines or heavier penalties, including two previous counts of attempted murder.
Ahead of the hearing, A was asked by reporters why he had attacked strangers and whether he had anything to say to the victims. "I am sorry. I have committed a crime deserving death," he said.
