Authorities in Taipei restricted the platforms amid concerns that users could wager on political outcomes
Taiwan has moved to block online access to Kalshi and Coinbase, citing concerns over suspected election-related betting activity on the platforms. The restriction was reported separately by AMBCrypto and crypto.news on October 16, 2026, with both outlets describing the action as tied to fears that users in Taiwan could place wagers on political outcomes through the sites.
Kalshi operates a regulated prediction market in the United States, where users can trade on the outcomes of events ranging from economic data releases to elections. Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally, has in recent periods expanded into prediction-market-adjacent products, drawing it into the same regulatory conversations as dedicated betting platforms. The overlap between crypto trading infrastructure and event contracts has increasingly put exchanges like Coinbase under scrutiny from regulators wary of political betting.
Election betting remains a contentious legal area in many jurisdictions. In the United States, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission has wrestled with whether platforms like Kalshi should be permitted to list contracts tied to election outcomes. Other countries have taken a more restrictive stance, often treating any form of wagering on political results as a threat to electoral integrity or public order. Taiwan's reported block suggests its regulators fall into the latter category, at least with respect to these two platforms.
Neither AMBCrypto nor crypto.news detailed the specific legal provision Taiwanese authorities invoked, nor did they specify whether the block applies to all users nationwide or targets particular access points. It also remains unclear from the available reporting whether the restriction is temporary, pending review, or intended as a lasting measure.
The action adds Taiwan to a growing list of jurisdictions grappling with how to classify prediction markets that touch on political events. Because Kalshi and Coinbase operate across borders, a block by one government can raise broader questions about how such products are regulated internationally. Crypto exchanges that diversify into event contracts may increasingly find themselves subject to rules designed for gambling or election-integrity enforcement, rather than traditional financial market oversight.
For Taiwanese users, the practical effect of the block is restricted access to the websites in question, though the precise technical implementation was not detailed in the available reports. Observers will likely watch for official statements from Taiwanese regulators, as well as any response from Kalshi or Coinbase, to clarify the scope and duration of the restriction.
Market Impact
A government-level block on access to Coinbase could have limited direct effect on its global trading volumes, given Taiwan represents one market among many the exchange serves. However, the action highlights regulatory risk tied to Coinbase's expansion into prediction-market-style products, which could draw similar scrutiny in other jurisdictions with strict rules on political betting.
For Kalshi, the block underscores the challenges prediction market operators face as they expand internationally, particularly around election-related contracts. Regulatory actions like this one could shape how such platforms design geofencing or compliance measures going forward, especially in countries where election betting carries legal or political sensitivity.
Taiwan's reported move against Kalshi and Coinbase illustrates the friction between expanding prediction markets and national rules on election-related wagering. Further clarity is likely to depend on official statements from Taiwanese authorities or responses from the platforms themselves.

Update 16 Oct 2026, 06:43 UTC · added by CoinGape
CoinGape reports that a New Taipei court issued the block order, specifying it was grounded in the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, under which bettors face up to six months in prison and platform operators face steeper penalties.
