BJP State Treasurer S.R. Sekhar has urged the Tamil Nadu government to revoke the reported 60-day parole granted to five convicts in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blasts case and return them to prison.
In a statement, Mr. Sekhar described the release as an injustice to the families of those killed and injured in the blasts. He cited the deaths of 56 people and injuries to hundreds in the serial explosions on February 14, 1998, which targeted multiple locations in Coimbatore.
Questioning the humanitarian grounds cited for granting parole, he referred to the severity of the crime and alleged that some of the convicts had been involved in conspiracies while in prison.
Mr. Sekhar criticised the TVK government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over the decision and accused it of being lenient towards those convicted in terror-related cases.
