The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of planning to manipulate the 2027 general elections through the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The opposition group alleged that the electoral commission intends to use AI in a manner that could favour the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming elections.
The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, raised the concerns in a statement, following INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan’s recent disclosure that the commission was considering the use of AI as part of its preparations for the 2027 elections.
Director questioned the decision to deploy the technology for the general elections without, according to him, adequate testing during previous off-cycle elections.
“INEC is plotting to rig the 2027 general elections in favour of the ruinous APC by deploying Artificial Intelligence, AI,” he alleged in a statement posted on X.
He added: “Suddenly, AI has become an attractive tool for the election management body.
“Not even a test run of the efficiency, or otherwise, of AI tools in off-cycle elections? Why did INEC not test-run AI in the Osun polls?”
The NDC spokesman also questioned the timing of the proposed deployment, given the proximity of the 2027 elections.
“Why the hurry to use AI in the forthcoming general elections, just less than 100 days away? Something is amiss,” he said.
The allegations come amid growing debate over the role of emerging technologies, including AI, in Nigeria’s electoral process.
INEC has yet to publicly respond to the NDC’s allegation that the proposed use of AI could be deployed to manipulate the 2027 polls.
