KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-elected Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) president Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin Tuanku Muhriz's focus is on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28).
Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin said squash is one of the most successful sports in Malaysia and the players were in smashing form at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games by delivering four gold medals.
"First of all, it's truly an honor to receive this responsibility as the new SRAM president," said Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin on Saturday after the association's annual general meeting and elections in Bukit Kiara.
"If you look at the other sports situation today, at the top level, we're coming up too.
"I am very proud to be receiving this trust, which is not just about high achievement, but also truly representing Malaysia.
"I recognise this is a very big responsibility, to carry all this legacy, to carry on these expectations.
"I want to continue the good work. I want to continue the programme by working with all the states. That's what I want to focus on.
"The important thing now is the route to the Olympics and that is to get a medal. The journey is for the players to work hard to reach that dream."
Ng Eain Yow and S. Sivasangari have retained their Asian Games titles recently to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where squash will be held for the first time.
Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin said they have to learn lessons from other sports like badminton and cycling, which won medals in the Olympics.
"We have to really make sure the infrastructure is there. We have two years to achieve the dream until the Los Angeles Olympics," he said.
Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin also congratulated Sivasangari as she will move up to world No. 4 on Monday.
He hoped to revive the Malaysia Cup, which has not been held for the last two years.
