The Best Meal Replacement Shakes Of 2026, Tasted And Reviewed By A Registered Dietitian

As a registered dietitian, I recommend getting most of your nutrition from a well-balanced diet. But a meal replacement shake can be an efficient supplement to help fill in the gaps. Whether you’re looking for a high-protein meal but have a low appetite or need something on the go after a gym session, meal replacement shakes can be literal lifesavers (and these ready to drink options are easier than using protein powders!).

The best meal replacement shakes provide calories, protein, carbohydrates, and a mixture of vitamins and minerals to mimic what’s found in a meal—just crack open a bottle and sip. They're substantial enough to provide you with the energy you need until your next meal. I often recommend them to clients who skip breakfast if they’re not hungry enough to eat. I advise thinking of meal replacements as a convenient supplement to, not a substitute for, a balanced diet.

However, there are many other factors to consider when choosing the right one for you. If you have diabetes or are watching your carbohydrate intake, choosing one that’s low in carbs and sugar is best. But if you’re active, planning a workout, or replenishing from one, you may want a shake higher in carbs. Calories, protein amount and type, and sweeteners are also worth evaluating.

The Huel Black Edition drink takes the top spot with its complete, plant-based formula. It contains 400 calories, 35 grams of protein, and 27 essential vitamins and minerals per bottle, so it’s built to do more than just tide you over.

It’s made with a blend of pea protein and faba bean powder, which provides a more complete amino acid profile. That means better support for muscle growth and recovery and satiety. Each bottle also delivers six to seven grams of dietary fiber, plus healthy fats. The added micronutrient blend of iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, and B-complex vitamins covers your daily needs.

Taste-wise, chocolate is the standout for me—rich, smooth, and not overly sweet. I also like the strawberry banana, though it’s more banana-forward, so you may want to skip it if that’s not your thing. Other flavors include cookies and cream, iced coffee, and vanilla. They also offer a variety box, making it easy to mix things up and avoid flavor fatigue. They’re shelf-stable for convenience but best served chilled—just make sure to refrigerate after opening.

Huel is also a Certified B Corporation, which means it meets rigorous standards for environmental impact, social responsibility, and ethical sourcing. If you care about what goes into your shake and how it’s made, that’s a meaningful bonus.

At $6.04 per bottle or $4.83 with a subscription, it’s one of the pricier options, but for a genuinely complete, no-prep, plant-based meal on the go, Huel Black Edition delivers.

If you’ve tried your fair share of pea protein shakes, you know the texture can be chalky and that it’s an acquired taste. So, I was genuinely surprised by how smooth and satisfying Evolve turned out to be. I tested the double chocolate and chocolate caramel flavors. Both were rich, creamy, and had no weird aftertaste.

It’s important to notes that with 140 to 150 calories, 20 grams of protein, and 10 grams of fiber, Evolve straddles the line between snack and supplement. It isn’t technically a meal replacement shake, but it’s great as early morning pre-workout fuel—especially blended into coffee when my appetite is slow.

Nutritionally, Evolve earns extra credit for its micronutrient profile of calcium, iron, zinc, and B12—nutrients that are often hard to get on a plant-based diet. And while pea protein is technically a complete protein, it’s a little low in methionine, which is important for tissue repair and metabolism. A simple fix is to pair it with methionine-rich foods like nuts or seeds to round out your intake.

At $2.79 per bottle, it’s one of the more affordable ready-to-drink options. Plus, it’s free from artificial flavors, colors, and GMOs.

Short for “Only What You Need,” OWYN delivers clean, high-quality nutrition without fillers, artificial additives, or common allergens. Every product is free from the top nine allergens, including dairy, soy, gluten, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts.

I tested both the chocolate and vanilla high-protein shakes. While both were smooth and not overly sweet, the chocolate stood out for its rich, satisfying flavor. The regular protein line expands the variety with flavors like cold brew coffee, cookies and creamless, and strawberry banana.

Each shake uses a blend of pea protein, organic pumpkin seed protein, and organic flax oil, which all help deliver 26 grams of plant-based protein. This combination supports a broader amino acid profile than pea alone, helping to promote muscle repair, satiety, and overall recovery—all without relying on dairy or soy.

The drink also includes 23 essential vitamins and minerals that support bone health, immune function, and energy metabolism. It’s a well-rounded shake that offers more than just protein.

With fewer than 200 calories, it’s not a full meal replacement, but it’s perfect as a post-workout shake, mid-day snack, or on-the-go boost. Blend it with fruit, oats, or nut butter for a more filling option, or pair it with breakfast to help round out your morning.

Among all the options I tested, Koia stands out as the best almond milk-based for its smooth texture and rich, nutty flavor.

I tried cacao bean, cold brew coffee, and vanilla bean, and each one delivered a creamy, balanced sip that felt more like a treat than a supplement. Accardi is obsessed with the chocolate banana flavor and loves using it to make lattes. “Besides tasting like a creamy treat in my coffee, it’s an easy 20 grams of protein, which makes it easier to hit my macro goals,” she says.

Each bottle comes in at 180 calories with 20 grams of plant-based protein, six grams of fats, and six grams of fiber. The protein blend—made from brown rice, peas, and chickpeas—offers a more complete amino acid profile than single-source proteins, supporting both muscle recovery and satiety.

While it’s important to note that it’s not high enough in protein and calories to replace a full meal, Koia is a satisfying option if you need something quick to hold you over until your next meal. Or, simply blend into a smoothie or pair with a piece of fruit and nuts for nutritional balance. And if you want an energy boost, the cold brew coffee flavor includes 100 milligrams of caffeine.

Koia uses a combination of organic cane sugar (adding three grams of sugar) and monk fruit extract to sweeten the shake, resulting in a smooth flavor without an overly sugary or artificial taste.

Ka’Chava is one of the best powder-based meal replacements thanks to its blend of whole-food ingredients.

Each serving provides 25 grams of plant-based protein from yellow pea and brown rice, covering all nine essential amino acids. You’ll also get six grams of fiber, omega-3s, MCTs, antioxidants such as turmeric, adaptogens like ashwagandha, probiotics, and digestive enzymes—a full-body formula in one scoop.

I tried all five flavors—vanilla, chocolate, coconut acai, matcha latte, and chai—and was surprised by how smooth and drinkable they were. No grassy aftertaste or chalky texture. My favorite combo? Vanilla, almond milk, and coffee for a creamy, energizing breakfast that held me over for hours—rare for a shake IMO.

At 240 calories, it may need a boost (like fruit or nut butter) to fully replace a meal. It’s also gluten-, dairy-, and soy-free, though it does contain coconut and sesame. It also has 450 milligrams of sodium per serving, which might be a consideration for some.

It’s a premium product at $4.66 per serving or $3.99 with a subscription, but it’s a balanced product with all three macros and nutrients to support your wellness. For those who want a nutrient-dense, plant-based powder that delivers on both flavor and function, Ka’Chava is as complete as it gets.

With 320 to 330 calories per 11-ounce bottle, and up to 400 calories in the larger 14-ounce version, this one’s a solid option for fueling.

Each 11-ounce serving provides 16 grams of protein from soy protein isolate, a complete plant-based protein containing all nine essential amino acids. The 14-ounce bottle bumps that up to a more ideal 20 grams of protein. With 19 grams of fat (primarily from high oleic sunflower and canola oils) and 28 to 32 grams of carbohydrates, Soylent offers a well-balanced macronutrient profile that makes it more than just a snack. Accardi likes them for breakfast when she’s not in the mood for a heavy meal. “These are ideal when I don’t want a full meal weighing me down, but still want an energy boost to start my day,” she says. “Plus, some flavors taste quite decadent, such as the chocolate and vanilla, so it’s easily enjoyable, although I will note some flavors leave a chalky aftertaste.”

Soylent’s flavor lineup includes both seasonal and staple options such as pumpkin spice, gingerbread, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, making it easy to find a favorite (or three).

As for sweeteners, Soylent uses a combination of allulose and sucralose. Allulose is a naturally occurring low-calorie sweetener, but sucralose is artificial and may cause digestive discomfort in some individuals.

At $2.50 per bottle (when purchased in a 12-pack), Soylent stands out as one of the most affordable and nutrient-dense high-calorie meal replacements.

What To Consider

Protein type

Whey-based: Whey protein is derived from dairy and is a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair, immune support, and overall health. The three main forms—concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate—differ in processing, digestion speed, and lactose content. Whey concentrate is the least processed and contains more fats and carbohydrates, while whey isolate is more refined, lower in fat, and typically better tolerated by those with lactose intolerance. As for hydrolysate, the protein is broken down into smaller peptides for easy digestion.

Plant-based: Plant-based proteins are sourced from ingredients such as peas, rice, soy, and hemp, which makes them a great option if you’re avoiding animal products. While some single-source plant proteins may lack one or more essential amino acids, blends can offer a complete amino acid profile. Plant proteins are naturally lactose-free and often higher in fiber, so they’re ideal if you’re sensitive to dairy or following a plant-forward diet.

Amount of protein

While a sedentary adult only needs 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for basic functions, you likely need more than that, especially if you’re active or looking to lose weight. Whether you're a recreationally active woman or a competing athlete, you'll want to aim for around 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, according to current research and recommendations.

Protein helps build and repair muscle, supports the immune system, and is needed for almost all chemical reactions that take place in the body. It also helps you feel fuller and slows your digestion down when you eat meals. A meal replacement shake that provides a quarter of your protein needs, or at least 20 grams per serving, is ideal.

Calories

If you’re looking for a true meal replacement shake, choose an option with a minimum of 300 to 400 calories. Even then, you may need to supplement it with something else, like a handful of nuts, a piece of fruit, or some veggies and hummus. I've included shakes with fewer calories in our guide, and these would make a great snack or breakfast if you’d otherwise skip the first meal of the day. Remember that a shake with fewer than 200 calories won’t supply your body with enough energy.

Sweeteners

Some meal replacement shakes have a lower amount of carbohydrates and added sweeteners, while others may contain anywhere from 15 to 30 grams of carbohydrates. Added sugars can range from cane sugar to fructose, but natural sweeteners such as stevia, monk fruit, or allulose are more common. Artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, aspartame, or sugar alcohols like erythritol or sorbitol can also be found, but it's best to limit your intake. They can cause stomach pain, gas, and bloating in people with sensitivities.

How We Chose

I’m a St. Louis-based dietitian with nearly a decade of experience in nutrition writing and editing. I also have an M.S. in nutrition and dietetics from Saint Louis University. After carefully researching and evaluating dozens of meal replacement shakes for a month, I came across these top eight. I focused on calories, protein type and amount, and sweeteners when making my decisions.

Should anyone avoid meal replacement shakes?

Meal replacement shakes are generally safe for most people, but individual needs and health conditions should be considered. For example, individuals with kidney or heart disease may need to limit protein or sodium intake, making some shakes unsuitable. Those with severe food allergies should also use caution, as many shakes contain common allergens or carry a risk of cross-contamination. As with any supplement or dietary change, it's best to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you’re managing a medical condition, taking prescription medications, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, to ensure a shake is safe and appropriate for you.

Is it bad to drink one every day?

It’s generally safe to drink meal replacements daily, especially if they’re the most practical option in your routine, but they should only make up a small portion of your overall diet. To support long-term health, it’s important to prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods that provide a wide range of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). Think of meal replacements as a convenient supplement to, not a substitute for, a balanced diet.
