Awele Elumelu rarely makes the headlines, but she is always in the story.
She is the wife of billionaire investor Tony Elumelu, but her story shows she isn’t standing in anyone’s shadow.
Elumelu is a physician, healthcare entrepreneur, corporate leader and philanthropist who has quietly built an empire of impact.
She earned her MBBS from the University of Benin and practised medicine in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, including at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Grantham and District Hospital in the UK.
Her clinical background covers general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and emergency medicine.
However, as someone who has always been the backbone of her husband, she later added executive education from Harvard Business School, IMD Switzerland, and the London School of Economics to her medical degree, preparing for a bigger role than the clinic.
In 2013, she founded Avon Medical Practice, a fast-growing network of clinics and medical centres focused on diagnostics, wellness and preventive care, and Avon Healthcare Limited; Avon HMO, now one of Nigeria’s leading health insurance providers.
Through Avon, she has pushed her core belief: that quality healthcare in Nigeria should not be for the rich alone.
She oversees healthcare investments for the family group, Heirs Holdings, chairs Heirs Insurance Brokers, and is a founding director of Heirs Holdings.
In January 2026, her influence reached new heights when she was appointed Chair of Transcorp Hotels Plc, owners of Transcorp Hilton Abuja. a decision by her husband to redefine hospitality through innovation, wellness integration, and responsible business practices.
Where Awele truly shines is philanthropy.
As co-founder and trustee of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Africa’s leading philanthropy, she has helped drive a revolution in entrepreneurship.
She believes Africa’s future will be driven by Africans themselves, and that health and economic empowerment must go together.
Her impact in global health was recognised in 2018 when she was appointed Gavi Champion for Immunisation in Africa by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, where she advocates for improved vaccine access and childhood immunisation across the continent.
In 2023, Nigeria honoured her with the national award of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic for her contributions to healthcare access and entrepreneurship.
Despite running multi-million naira businesses and foundations, Awele has kept her family central. She and her husband, Tony, have seven children: five girls and two boys. She is known for maintaining a private, balanced family life while leading major corporate boards.
Another quality which defines her is her simple but exotic nature and ambience.
She is always simple, with little make-up, simple dressing, nothing too catchy and everywhere.
Whether at occasions or family outings, Elumelu, like her husband, who is known for his love for suits, is always presentable and simple in her choice of clothes and make-up, yet she always catches attention because of her poise.
