The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it has contained a fire outbreak at Folashade Tinubu Ojo Ebute-Ero Market on Lagos Island, preventing the inferno from spreading to adjoining buildings and shops.
The agency also reported a separate fire incident at 3Pots by 217 Lounge in Ojodu Berger, with no casualties recorded in either incident.
LASEMA disclosed this in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, on Thursday, October 15.
According to the statement, the agency received a distress call about the Ebute-Ero Market fire at about 1:38 p.m., prompting the deployment of its Sharks Team from the Lekki Base.
“The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has once again demonstrated the effectiveness of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s huge investment in emergency preparedness and market safety with the swift containment of a major fire outbreak at the popular Folashade Tinubu Ojo Ebute-Ero Market, Gorodom, Lagos Island,” the statement reads.
The team discovered that a section of a storey building used as storage shops had been engulfed by fire, which started on the ground floor and spread to the top floor.

“The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report,” the statement said.
LASEMA said it coordinated a multi-agency response involving the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Central Business District Crew, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Nigeria Police Force.
The agency said the joint intervention successfully extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings and shops in the densely populated market.
The statement added that the operation salvaged goods and property worth hundreds of millions of naira and averted further damage.

Although no death was recorded, an adult male who fell from the building during the incident was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
LASEMA said dampening-down operations were ongoing to extinguish residual hotspots and ensure the safety of the affected environment.
In a separate incident, the agency said its Tiger Team from C3 responded to a fire at 3Pots by 217 Lounge, located at 71 Obokun Avenue, by Baale Street, Ojodu Berger.
“The Agency also successfully managed a fire outbreak at 3Pots by 217 Lounge, Ojodu Berger,” the statement added.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire was caused by an electrical surge from an air-conditioning unit on the top floor of the two-storey building.
According to the statement, the fire destroyed property on the top floor but was prevented from spreading to the lower floors and neighbouring buildings, most of which were salvaged.
LASEMA said the fire was completely extinguished, while dampening-down and recovery operations had been concluded. No casualty was recorded, and the response team had returned to base.
The agency urged traders and market leaders to strengthen fire prevention measures, including avoiding indiscriminate storage of combustible materials, ensuring proper electrical connections and providing accessible firefighting equipment in shops.
It also reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while commending the emergency responders for their collaboration.
