Borrowing money is a lot easier when the lender isn’t nervous about you. CoreWeave is learning that lesson in public, with some of its bonds now yielding around 15%.
On October 16, 2026, GMI Cloud CEO Alex Yeh called those yields “insane.” His comparison point was a loan his own company secured at 3.45%, denominated in Taiwan dollars.
That is a gap of more than 11 percentage points between two companies selling broadly similar things: access to AI computing power.
How CoreWeave’s bonds got here
The pressure is concentrated in CoreWeave’s 9.625% notes due 2032. Those bonds saw yields reach 15%, and closed at 14.5% in one session.
Other CoreWeave bonds were trading at yields between 14.9% and 16%. For context, the coupon on those 2032 notes is 9.625%, so the market is now demanding far more than the company originally agreed to pay.
The stock market noticed. CoreWeave shares fell 15.5% on October 14, 2026, closing at $65.78.
The core worry is the balance sheet. CoreWeave’s debt and lease obligations totaled approximately $52 billion by June 2026, and the company reported second-quarter interest expenses of approximately $640 million.
Why Yeh’s comparison stings
Yeh’s remark was more than a jab at a rival. It highlights GMI Cloud’s argument for why it may be better positioned: lower funding costs and proximity to Asian supply chains.
If one company borrows at 3.45% and another at around 15%, the cheaper borrower can price services more aggressively, absorb delays more easily, and expand without sweating every coupon payment.
The spillover and the commentary
CoreWeave’s bond selloff did not stay contained. Selling spread to related AI names, including Nebius and Oracle.
The turmoil drew attention from prominent voices. Elon Musk responded on social media with a single word: “yikes.” Investor Chamath Palihapitiya also weighed in online.
CoreWeave’s response: chase cheaper capital
CoreWeave is not sitting still. Co-founder Brannin McBee said the company is seeking investment-grade ratings on its chip-backed debt.
The goal is to unlock capital from insurers, a pool McBee described as effectively “unlimited.”
Chip-backed debt means loans secured by the GPUs themselves. If CoreWeave can convince rating agencies that those chips are reliable collateral, it might refinance at rates much closer to what lenders charge safer borrowers.
The case for and against panic
Analysts are split. Some maintain underperform ratings on CoreWeave, signaling they expect the stock to lag.
Others point to the company’s contracted backlog, which exceeds $100 billion. That figure represents committed future business, and some analysts see it as a cushion that could help keep the turmoil from spreading further across neocloud firms.
But backlog and cash are different things. Revenue arrives over time, while interest payments arrive on schedule.
