True Detective fans just got some exciting news: two of the main cast members and the setting of the show's fifth season have been revealed. The casting announcements are especially exciting, as it has been confirmed that Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will star as the headlining duo in Season 5.
What we know about True Detective Season 5
True Detective has garnered a reputation as one of the best and most influential crime dramas on television, with its influence most recently being felt in DC Studios' Lanterns. Each season follows a different pair of detectives as they unravel high-stakes mysteries across the United States. The last season aired in 2024 and starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, but the first season, featuring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, remains the most iconic.
If any pair of actors can challenge McConaughey and Harrelson for the True Detective crown, it'll be Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas. Variety reports that Cage's character is named Henry Logan, while Banderas will portray Rai García. We don't know much more about those characters, but it's safe to assume they'll be the detectives that the fifth season focuses on.
That report also confirms the season will be set in Jamaica Bay, which is part of Long Island in New York. We also know that production will begin in 2027 and that Season 4 showrunner Issa López will return to write, direct, and executive produce the fifth season.
True Detective Season 5 doesn't have an official release date yet, and with Skydance potentially merging Paramount Plus and HBO Max, we don't even know which streaming service it'll end up on. Still, production starting next year is a good sign, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it airing on HBO sometime in 2028.
