Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s grandson, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, has been commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in a ceremony that was held at Uganda Military academy in Kabamba, Mubende district.
He celebrated the milestone in a post on X, writing: “Earned through sacrifice, worn with pride. The journey continues.”
Kainerugaba successfully completed a commissioning course which lasted a period of 44 weeks at the United Kingdom’s military academy in Sandhurst in the month of August 2026 after which he was officially commissioned on 7th August 2026 during the Sovereign parade of the Academy.
His father, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba also graduated from Sandhurst in the year 2000.
Ruhamya’s military journey began in June 2025 where he was enlisted as a private in UPDF and briefly served in the Elite Special Forces Command before going to the United Kingdom for his training.
President Museveni addressed the graduating officers during the ceremony saying, ”To the new officers, remain disciplined, stay close to the people and serve Uganda with honour.”
He also highlighted how important economic development, military training and investment in science and technology is to national defence. ”A strong defence requires a strong economy, well trained soldiers, investment in science and technology,” President Museveni emphasized.
Museveni praised the Chief of Defence Forces and other military commanders for the efforts they have put in a bid to curb corruption within the army which directly affects the welfare of service personnel.
”I particularly thank the Chief of Defence Forces and his commanders for fighting corruption in the army and improving the welfare of our soldiers. I am following the improvements in barracks and pay, but the fight against corruption is especially important because it directly affects the welfare of our men and women in uniform,” Museveni wrote in an X post shared after the event.
CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba also celebrated his son's commissioning as a UPDF second lieutenant following his military training at Sandhurst.
Describing the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) as “God’s Army", Muhoozi combined a father’s congratulations with a prayer for the young officer.
“I want to congratulate my beloved son, Ruhamya abasheija, for commissioning as an officer in God’s Army…UPDF. May Almighty God always bless you 2nd Lieutenant Ruhamya,” he wrote.
Ruhamya’s commissioning marks another chapter in the military careers of three generations of the Ugandan President’s immediate family, with Museveni and General Muhoozi having also served in the military.
