The Mysuru-Bengaluru highway was blocked at the Gananguru toll plaza in Srirangapatna for about two hours on Friday (October 23, 2026) as farmers staged a protest to press for their various demands, including a hike in prices of sugarcane.
A large number of farmers led by Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah and Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) leader Badagalapura Nagendra gathered at the Toll Plaza.
Though senior police officials including Superintendent of Mandya district police Shobharani tried to convince the protestors, they did not relent.
Meanwhile, police diverted the traffic to alternative routes. Vehicles plying on both sides of the highway were diverted in view of the blockade. The highway as well as the service road was blocked at the Gananguru toll plaza.
However, the protestors dispersed after Minister for Water Resources N. Cheluvarayaswamy reached the spot and assured the farmers that the State Government was with the farmers. He also received a memorandum from the protesting farmers.
According to Mandya district police, the highway remained blocked at the Gananguru toll plaza from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. “The highway was reopened for traffic after 1.30 pm,” the police official added.
