Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the passage of the proposed LGBTQ+ bill so long as he is Speaker, insisting that it must be considered a consensus law rather than a partisan political agenda.
Speaking at the IPR Ghana 2026 National PR Conference and Excellence Awards in Koforidua, Bagbin said he had opposed the manner in which the bill was previously rushed through Parliament, arguing that a matter of such national significance required broader agreement.
“When the law was rushed through at the last minute at my back, I came out and said no way, this bill must go through as a consensus bill. We don’t want partisanship in it. It is for everybody. It means a lot to Ghanaians,” he said.
The Speaker disclosed that some errors had been identified in the bill, particularly in amendments introduced at the last minute, requiring Parliament to reconsider the legislation when it resumes its next meeting.
“We have identified a few mistakes, most of the last-minute amendments, and therefore the next meeting will come back for a second consideration, and we’ll pass it,” he said.
Bagbin maintained that he remained committed to the bill’s passage while he continued to serve as Speaker, suggesting that as far as he remains Speaker, the anti-LGBTQ bill will be law of the land.
“When we are no longer there, you can do what you want to do. But so far as we continue to exist, that law will be the law of the land. You can do whatever you want after I’m gone,” he stated.
His comments signal his continued push for Parliament to revisit the proposed legislation, with the next meeting expected to provide an opportunity for further consideration of the identified amendments.
