Barcelona have reopened discussions about signing a defender in the January transfer window after their 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain exposed concerns about Hansi Flick’s defensive options.
According to SPORT, the Catalan club is reconsidering the possibility of recruiting an experienced centre-back or full-back, although their restricted salary cap could complicate any move.
The debate marks a potential change of direction after Barcelona opted against signing a central defender during the summer, despite Ronald Araujo’s departure on loan and Andreas Christensen’s persistent fitness problems.
Barcelona reconsider defensive transfer strategy
The defeat in Paris has intensified scrutiny of Barcelona’s defensive depth, with vulnerabilities across the back line allowing PSG to threaten repeatedly.
Problems on the flanks and lapses in concentration at centre-back left Flick’s side exposed, while Joan Garcia’s saves helped prevent the scoreline from becoming even more damaging.
For Barcelona, they know that their attacking quality can decide matches, but competing consistently in the Champions League also requires a defence capable of withstanding sustained pressure against top opponents like PSG.
Notably, Flick had the opportunity to strengthen that area during the summer transfer window, when Barcelona were linked with several defenders.

However, the German ultimately chose not to proceed, partly because of the financial demands involved and his belief that the existing squad deserved an opportunity to prove itself.
However, the club is now reconsidering that decision as the limitations of their defensive resources become harder to ignore.
Eric Garcia and Christensen injuries increase Flick’s concerns
Barcelona’s immediate difficulties have been compounded by injuries to both right-back options, Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde.
On top of that, Christensen’s recurring fitness issues have further reduced Flick’s flexibility, leaving the manager with fewer dependable alternatives across the defensive line.
Eric’s absence is particularly significant because Flick values his organisational qualities.

As a result, Pau Cubarsi has become an especially important figure in the current setup.
Hence, Barcelona will be keen to avoid further setbacks involving the young centre-back, whose availability is crucial while other defensive options remain uncertain.
Considering all this, the current situation strengthens the argument for recruiting an experienced defender who can contribute immediately rather than relying exclusively on players returning from injury.
Salary cap is key for Barcelona
For what it is worth, Barcelona’s renewed interest does not guarantee a January signing, as the club has limited room under their salary cap.
This means a reliable addition could depend on a player leaving the squad first, like Alejandro Balde.
That financial obstacle makes the recruitment decision more complicated.
